Another Dud Raptor?

Post by Easto »

The last one I had went south within a year. I just purchased this model... Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD3000HLHX 300GB 10000 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5". I bought this one for the size. After it came in the mail I noticed that the sticker on the front "Enterprise Storage". Anyway, the read and write speeds are about 126/126 mb/s. Something isn't right. It's hooked up to the same computer, same everything but this one is just a snail. Did I buy the wrong model? I would have thought that all Raptors were pretty much the same and this one also got great reviews. Am I missing something?

I have one just lying around that I used for an OS drive for a couple of years before I switched to SSDs... It is WD3000HLFS model though, looking at it. It was fast for a spinner, never had problems with it. Can't remember exact benchmarks and not sure about the model differences though.

Make sure you have the correct drivers for your MoBo, use the primary SATA ports (not RAIDable ones), switching out the SATA cable can sometimes make a difference as well.

Wow...can't recall ever losing a Raptor.....I think I still have my original first generation 36 gigs ones in a drawer somewhere. Had probably 6 of 'em over my lifetime.
I'd check running environment (heat, cooling, quality power), and as Philip mentioned...type of connection.

I have a Velociraptor 1TB in this machine I have. I have an SSD 250gb and I use the Raptor for storage and documents.
It has been in my machine for 3years and I can only say how good it has been.

Sorry for you Easto. :( I hope you get it fixed soon.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I knew the 1st one was bad but I held onto it anyway. It was clicking quite a lot. This new one is just slow.

I'm also having the same problem with Win 7 software as I had with the other drive (now I'm not sure if it was the drive) but my screen is freezing and mouse freezes. I posted this in another thread. It's a clean legit install of OS. I'm thinking maybe the vid card is going bad(?) It's a Gforce 8800 GTS and it's probably the oldest thing in this machine. Outside of the screen freezing (this was the first time it happened with the new install and on the 3rd day) but it's exhibiting the same problem as before. I'm seriously considering building a new rig around my current CPU and replace everything else.

I have been doing some online research and it appears that the read/write speeds are about what everyone else is showing. Biggest plus is the fast random access.

I have quite a few Raptors that I use for storage and some for tier 2 type machines to boot. All are rock solid and have been a long time.

What is the date of manufacture and the model number?

Sorry, been really busy lately.

The first one that I bought about 6 months ago.. WD2500HHTZ Date: 22 Dec 2013

This is the one that was clicking from the start. Ever so quietly so I just thought it was normal. It progressed to being a bad drive and I pulled it and put in the new one. I'll try and get that info soon.

I'm in the process of wiping it clean and I'm going to see about sending it back to WD.
