Locking up on Windows login screen

Post by Easto »

Win 7 64bit on a machine that has been trouble free for 2-3 years. The last several days it will boot as far as the screen where I pick which account I want to log in as and it locks up. Does not respond to the keyboard or mouse. I have to do a hard reboot and the 2nd time it always seems to proceed as if nothing happened other than the fact that it opens to the "Start in Safe Mode" screen and I usually just pick to load normally. For the rest of my session everything works fine.

I have updated my vid drivers and it still happens. I a little stumped. Let me know if you need any other information. Nothing new has been installed or changed. I'm thinking or running a check disk on the drive when I go to bed tonight.

I'd start looking at a couple of things...
*Corrupted user profile. Can happen from many things, locked up once, or failing HDD, malware. Since you can get into safe mode, go in, create a new local user account...and try that user account in normal mode for a while. Work fine? Or does the issue follow?
*If the issue follows to a new profile, could be drivers or malware. What peripherals are connected? I recently had a situation where someone brought a computer in...complaining that it hung at the select user screen after bootup....wouldn't go further...sorta locked up there. On my bench...ran like a champ every time. "What devices do you have home that connect to it?" I asked. "An old scanner and printer" he said. I told him to take it home..do NOT plug those in yet...run it a few times..and then plug one in...see what it does, plug the other in...see what it does. He took it home, plugged in printer..fine, plugged in scanner...hung up! Bad scanner! Can be other things...wireless NICs, optical drives, keyboards, mice, etc. Try a process of elimination of hardware peripherals.
*Failing HDD...could be corruption, possibly in the users profile and HIVE. Clone to a different HDD.

Assuming you've done all the malware/rootkit checks.

Thanks, I have my old C-drive that I cloned onto this new raptor about 6 months ago. I'll drop that in tomorrow. I'll also try the user profile. I don't know why but I keep thinking it is the HDD failing.

How would the profile effect this? The screen that locks up is the one where I click on which icon (profile) I want to log in as. I can't even get as far as clicking since the keyboard and mouse are not responding.

I just ran a rootkit check (Malwarebytes version) and it came up clean

It wasn't clear exactly at what point it locks up....before you select the user profile, or after you click it.
Try TDSSKiller. The Malwarebytes rootkit checker ....I've found it pretty blind.

Tried the TDSSKiller, everything appears clean. I'll try swapping the drive later today and report back.

Sorry if I wasn't clear in my earlier post. It will start to boot like everything is fine. When you get to the screen where I click on either the admin or named user the keyboard and mouse will freeze. I've had it actually let me click on the profile icon and start typing in that user's password and then freeze in the middle of the password. But mostly it's just freezing at the user selection screen. After 1 or 2 reboots it will boot and let me log on as usual.
