problem using linksys router

Post by spud »

i installed a linksys 4-port router to share my cable connection among 4 clients.

it works fine .... except ....

two of the machines can't "see" each other in Network Neighborhood, even though two of them "see" all the machines. (makes it hard to transfer files) to of the machines are running win95, two are running win98. one of each operating system doesn't see the full network.

any suggestions? (thanks, in advance)

Make sure all PC's are in the same Workgroup and on the same Sub-Net with the same Sub-Net Mask. You may even want to retype the workgroup name on all PC's.

Yeah you could do that, but also make sure that File and printer sharing is bound to NetBeui and not TCP/IP.

If you are using static routing, make sure that all the IP addresses are different. As previously stated, make sure that all the puters are on the same workgroup and that they have different names. Also you can unbind "Client for microsoft networks" and "File and print sharing" from TCP/IP and bind them to NetBEUI (doesnt really make a difference). Then try restarting all the puters if it still doesnt work. If it still doesnt work after that, reset the router and turn of DHCP (if you can). If you do disable it make sure to set the IP and subnet mask on each puter. Then also if you access the internet, make sure you go into the routers setup page and go into "Status" and write down the DNS #'s for your connection. Enter those #'s in also in you network config screen under the DNS tab (duh). Make sure that you also enter a host name (could be anything but i just use my ISP's name). Then go to gateway tab in the network config screen and enter the routers IP address. After all that if it still doesn't work then give Linksys' tech support a call (best if you call after 9 p.m. PST).

Probably a lot of peeps will say that it is wasting you time but that is the way i setup my Linky and it works just fine.

Good luck,
