HP Pavillion DV7-4077CL Overheating Issue

Post by RaisinCain »

OK. I have taken the laptop apart and cleaned and re-applied the thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5) to the CPU & GPU. I am still having issues with the fan running constantly (even set to not always run in BIOS) and random shutdowns and restarts. Any suggestions? I know there was an issue with the heat pipe and thermal grease that was used in these (and other) models. Thanks!

Most of those D7 models are notorious for running wicked hot, and many of them came with a faulty cooling setup.
Some have 1x vent, some have 2x vents. If you have two vents, one of the side should be GPU, and one in the back CPU. You probably never feel the CPU vent blowing out? If not...the fan in the unit is the wrong one and doens't have the opening on the side to blow some of its air across the CPU sink, hit up Google and there are some guides for taking that fan out and cutting a little hole in the side wall so some air blows across the CPU.

Latest BIOS will also kick in some better fan controls but you basically want them "always on" on that sucker, especially if you have the nVideo GPU option. Which..brings along another glitch, of which there is a 'bake the motherboard in the oven" trick to re-ball it (but that only buys a few more months of usage until she really dies).

Thanks for your response Cat! I have the ATI/Intel graphics chips. 1 vent and have applied the Arctic Silver 5 to the chips and the heatsinks BIOS updated. Not sure what options I have at this point as the laptop is out of warranty. Everything is clean as far as the heatsink and fan goes.

Ugh... I haven't come across the single vent ATI ones....I'm at a loss for other suggestions.

Not like taking them apart is fun, but I wonder what the cooling fan 'n surrounding veins to direct the air flow are on that one, and if some of those had a similar issue where the fans with the "solid wall on the left side" for example couldn't blow air across the fins of the CPU heat sink.

Not that bad taking it apart. I think at this point the culprit may be the battery. Fire up Win 7 and unplug the charger- boom the laptop gives me the weird video and just locks up. As long as it is plugged in it is "OK" I will have to run some more tests though. Running a stress test with IntelBurnTest right now and so far everything is good.

Spoke too soon. Locked up after 5 of the 10 tests. Damn it. Oh well. I guess I can part it out.
