adelphia is my service provider as well, so all i need to know is what modem they gave you. is it a surfboard 3100 or 3100D(external ones that use a network card to connect to your PC) or is it one of the internal ones? let me know. there are different ways to do it, as you've seen. but your options are better if you have an external one. also, as far as i know adelphia lets you buy your own 2-way but the also give you no support on it. the only give you limited support if the modem isn't synching.

ONE WAY CABLE MODEM

Post by Chrosby »

Can someone please offer me advice on the "simplest" way to access a one way cable modem between two PC's? I have studied and read and then read some more and I hope I can just find someone who already has this setup in their home and can give it to me straight. I keep getting conflicting instructions from different web sites, I suppose because there are several different ways you can try to do this. Only they don't all work..lol. I don't see the point of connecting the two if I can't access the c/m. I can just use regular DUN to gain internet access on the other until I figure out a way to get this accomplished. My service provider is Adelphia/Powerlink and it is the modem they installed. Dials into the phone line and then retrieves and sends back over cable. GEEZ I just wish Powerlink would upgrade to a 2 way modem in my area. Oh yes one more question. what if I bought a 2 way cable modem myself and installed? Can I use the settings my access provider has already given me?

Hey Chrosby. Well you can install NIC cards in each of the PC's and use ICS if you have Win98SE on the PC with the modem or another type of software. This probably wont work because the Internal modem you have does downstream only and its an ISA card that basically sucks. Or you can call Adelphia and tell them you need to upgrade to win2k for work or something. And they will Install a SB3100D or SB4100D external "3-Way" Modem(They should do it for free, im 90% sure ask anways). All this means that if you dont have 2-Way or Upstream is down for some reason the Cable modem has its own telephone modem to dial out to connect 1-way. hence the gay name. I suggest this because its better to have, and if you get a router you dont have to worry about server being on to browse the web on the other PC. Hope that helps.
