Belkin F7D6301 tweaking for gaming

Post by myotis1134 »

Hello forum,

This is my first post on here, but I have used the TCP optimizer for several of my computers, one with XP, and more recently with 7. I haven't got on my game yet to see how much of a difference the 'optimize' profile has made, but I want to extend my appreciation for making this tool available to all.

My question concerns the Belkin F7D6301 wireless router, but first let me try to explain my setup:

Computer Specs:

Computer - ASUS K55A (laptop)
CPU - Intel Core i5-2450M @ 2.50 GHz
RAM - 8 GB
Network Adapter card (LAN) - Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
(wireless) - Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter
OS - Microsoft Windows 7 (64 bit)

Internet Specs:

Internet provider - Alaska Communications Service (ACS)
Internet type - DSL (3.00 MB download, 1.5 MB upload)
Router - Belkin F7D6301

The DSL modem, phone line and router are in the room next to mine. This was cool at first, since I got a great signal, but I play BF2, and eventually the wireless was preventing me from playing better. I got a 20 foot network cable and directly connected my laptop to the router by going through the heater ducts. This sped my connection up considerably, but with a 3.0 to 1.5, it can only get so good.

I used the TCP Optimizer on my laptop tonight, and I’m going to see how improved it is in a few minutes. My question is whether or not I need to tweak the settings on the router and DSL modem as well, for enhanced gaming.

If this is the case, could someone direct me to the best source for learning how to do this properly? Thanks in advance.

Give me a break, I wrote this at 3 in the morning. What I was attempting to ask, was for a link to a sticky or tutorial that could help me ensure that my wireless router's settings are not going to prevent my TCP Optimized laptop from getting the best speed possible from the DSL modem. I did, in fact, search vigorously for a post that would explain what settings needed to be looked at, etc., but didn't find anything that was helpful. Most of the router posts are dealing with wifi issues, which I don't have, due to my having a direct connection to the router. Still, the router is my access point to the DSL modem, and I don't want everything to bottleneck at the router because a setting is '1' instead of '2'.

There is very little you can do with the router itself that you haven't already, i.e. if you're bypassing the wireless and that is out of the loop. It will indroduce very little latency (1-2ms) and it should not affect your gaming. You can only optimize your OS settings for gaming, and traceroutes can pinpoint any remaining issues, as in which hop causes delays.

Thanks Phillip, that's what I was hoping to hear.

Check if you're bypassing the wireless and that is out of the loop. This may be the problem
