wifi router to router connection

Post by hiawatha »

Hello ppl, I have a small problem which I try to solve.

I have a WiFi router from my provider, router(cable and wifi), file server, PC, laptop and some android phones. And now I am wondering if it is possible to make wifi connection between 2 routers, so I would not have to run cables between them. My pc and file server dont have wifi card.

I searched for some solution but every thing which pops out are about cable connections between router etc. Or they say that its difficult and no particular information about how its done. I understand that routers are not designed to talk to each others but... any ideas or an useful link?
thanks in advance.

Here's a Wikipedia article on the topic:

What you want to do is possible. However, most typical SOHO routers cannot handle it. You might be lucky and have a router that can handle it. Or you might need to purchase suitable equipment.

You have to run an ethernet cable between the 2 and set the secondary one to bridge mode.

You may be able to set one of the routers as a wireless client, and leave the other one as is (or set as an access point). However, the "client" router needs to support this feature, or you may have to install third party firmware on it like DD-WRT and do some configuration..

Personally I'd take ethernet over powerline bridges, or Moca bridges.....to get bandwidth to the server and your PC.
