You could probably leave out DOS, or mention it in a way like, "I have extensive experience with computers dating back to the DOS era of computing. But I'm not sure who would really care about DOS other than the guy Qui gon jon has with calendar issues. lol

I spend about 15-30 seconds on applications/resumes when I look at them. Seriously, Usually 5 seconds if they have a criminal record. Then, seriously look at the ones I didn't toss. Usually 5 or less.

Make yourself stand out. Find out what their goals are and find what about yourself meets those goals.

"Opportunity" is a word corporate likes to hear. Basically, you don't have a problem, you have an opportunity.

Shows a proactive attitude instead of a reactive one.

All I got.

Oh...everyone slightly fluffs a resume. But, don't fluff it beyond reason.

The things I hear in interviews would astound you......

If you have MS Office I can send you one. Honestly, certs give a little more weight to the OJT part of your knowledge I'm afraid. Have you thought about getting your A+, Net+, Security+ or (eventually) your MCSE and/or Cisco certs? If this is what you want to do for a profession I would HIGHLY suggest you pursue the previous suggestions. Just my opinion though.

I do have MS Office. Have I thought of Certs? Honestly no. I have a ball buster that wants me to pursue a degree in another field. If they would like to pay for it, then fine. I don't for see that.

Those would help if there were ACTUAL jobs available in IT. Problem is there are none so those certs are useless when it comes to getting an actual job in IT. JMO.

The aggressiveness of pursuing a career, getting out and obtaining interviews, doing what you have to to build your resume, actively pursuing jobs.....show me someone that's been pounding the bricks for over a year doing those..and I'll listen and give their opinion some credit. Otherwise....from what I see "from the trenches every day"....it's ripe for the picking! I'm in the field every day, deal with others in the field every day, I see what's going on, matter of fact just 3 months ago we ourselves hired added a new position and filled it. And just 2 years ago we got busy enough to hire a full time office manager.

Here's an article talking about the top 30 upcoming jobs in Boston. IT related jobs are in position 7, 8, 9, 28, and 30. Pretty bright outlook.

Best 10 Jobs in the US from Huffington Post, IT jobs hold positions 1 and 9

I could go on and on and fill gigs of Philips hard drive space with posts and links.....
The economy has turned around...has been for a while. We're much busier...and even in real estate, my wife is cranking...she's made more in the past 5 months than the prior 2 years combined..and she did pretty well last year. The housing market is a good measure of the pulse of the economy.
IT jobs are plentiful. Yeah, the market is very competitive...you have to actually work hard at getting a job, you have to be aggressive and market yourself with confidence...the competition is fierce, but the openings are abundant.

The above links I put up are facts...not opinions.

Here's a link to just one...(of many)...sources of local jobs. It shows jobs that are IT related within 15 miles of my house...most of which are under 7 miles from my house.
http://jobs.newlondoncountyjobs.com/c/s ... ite_id=269
One is an IT support got for a local credit union that has several branches in the area...a good job.
Another one shows several openings...different skill levels, for positions in very large IT department of General Dynamics. Those are mega sweet jobs. General Dynamics is huge!
Another 4 listings are good jobs in the IT field with rather large companies also...CSC being one very large one.

Now if I felt like taking the time to link up big online job hunt sources....like monster, and local newspapers....I could keep putting up factual posts.

As for CD...I've seen him making posts on this forum about doing his resume and hating his current job. OK..that's step 1. That doesn't speak factually about actual IT job availability in his area. The next stepS are....to go out and bang on doors...and get in front of the face of possible employers. That's the hard part for many people. Gotta strap on the big boy pants and get out there and do it. Because that's where the confident/aggressive people make out well and land those jobs, and the quiet/meek ones go home and say they can't find anything.

And the thing with lots of IT positions....the "area" doesn't matter, you could live like a hermit on an island and still hold down a killer IT job as long as you had remote access to what you have to manage. So even if you live out in the so called swamps and sticks like Sava....wouldn't stop me from doing much of my work.

I could say with confidence I could move to any of our beautiful 50 states in this country and land a sweet IT gig within 6 months.

Cat, God bless you if you could but there are many people in the IT field having a hard time getting another job instead of a job that sux like CD and myself dont enjoy in the field. Lets just say we agree to disagree.Looking as hard as one can doesnt always mean your gonna find what one wants. A friend's kid graduated from Stonehill in Easton, Ma with honors and cant find one either.

I would try to slip in how long you been at your current job, even though you have no certs, you have experience and that counts alot. Try to get your Net+ and and A+ that actually applies as one test completed for the MCSA. Then you have A+, Net+ and MCSA.

The MCSA is 4 of thier easier test or try to get the MCSE it's only 4 test too. My old boss would pay for the test unless you failed, then you paid for it.

Good luck you've been bitching about your current job long enough.
