Actiontec GT784WN for AT&T DSL Service

Post by RetiredGator »

I am considering replacing my existing 2Wire AT&T gateway with this Actiontec model. My download speeds with the 2Wire are OK (up to 7 Mb/second), but my wireless coverage in the house is not very good. I have heard that Wireless-N gateways like the Actiontec have better wireless coverage and speed. Does anybody have any experience with this Actiontec gateway?

I am also considering switching to the AT&T U-Verse 18 Mb/second VDSL service, which just recently became available in my area. Does anyone have any feedback on the wireless performance of the 2Wire gateway furnished with the U-Verse service?

The actiontech should work. For settings I would copy what the 2wire has and go that way. YOu will need say vp:0/vc:35, and such settings. I believe the 2wire should have a connection settings page that shows you what it's using to connect. Just mimic or set those exact settings in the actiontec and you should be good to go. As far as technical support for the Actiontec you would be on your own as it's not a supported device, but there is nothing that says you can't use it.

Now for the 2nd part of the question for UVerse. As far as I know, most the 2wire's wireless performance is good. I can't say I have heard a whole lot of complaints since the firmware changed last year. If there still is wireless problems I can't say I have had many complaints come to me in that regard.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your help. Instead of replacing my existing 2Wire gateway, I purchased a ZyXEL WAP-3206 wireless access point, and used it to provide wireless service by disabling WiFi on the 2Wire gateway. The ZyXEL provides much better wireless coverage, and it is a 802.11n device, which the 2Wire is not.

As to the second part, AT&T is coming in a few days to install the 18 Mbs U-verse service. I snagged a real good deal on the U-verse service, which will give me three times the speed of my current DSL service, and will cost me $8 per month less (for a while). They are giving me the 2Wire U-verse gateway for free and have waived any installation charges. If the the wireless performance of the U-verse 2Wire gateway is insufficient, I can use the ZyXEL with it. Alternately, the ZyXEL can be used as a repeater instead of as an access point.

ahh, good. Hope you enjoy the service. Let me know if the install doesn't go as well or there are complications. the QR code you can scan with a phone (or a java app I believe) and should give you the info. Ironically I live in a brick home with plaster walls, so I know a bit about what you are suffering. I have one AP in the front of the house and one in the back of the house.
