Backstory:
Was blessed (?) with running a remote (~1/4 mile down the road from "work") test lab running HPLC pumps (we make the seals that go into some of these). I set up a bank of IP cameras for remote monitoring of pressure gauges, leak detectors and so forth. Recently had a succession of failures I noticed while at home over the weekend, which meant I had to go to work on both Saturday and Sunday in the wee hours of the morning just to turn the bench power supply off and go back home. When hung over, that kinda sucks.
So, I resolved to make my life easier by giving me the ability to remotely shut off a pump(s). Theres lots of home/office control hardware out there but I didn't want to go that route as it can get pricey (in the context of the simple task I wanted done) when including base station/auxilliary control devices.
The device I linked is simple, without 40 billion useless and/or buggy bells and whistles. It has 4 AC outlets with independant control of each (through browser), either through on/off scheduling or manual on/off. No ActiveX crap so you can do it from any device with a real web browser (smart phone, PC, etc.). It has a short list of functions... manual/forced on/off of each AC port, fairly robust scheduling on/off of each individual port, DDNS for the home users, local wake on LAN packet send, and something else that I'm forgetting. Something I don't need I guess *shrug*.
With creative manual-off and scheduled-on you could easily bounce your LAN's devices (thinking outside my uses ATM) if say... you're having issues trying to remote into your system at home, or need to power cycle a device.
AAAAnyways... ~$80. That worked for me. Turnkey, (no need for a computer anywhere on the LAN), I'm done.
