dsl modem and lan problem

Post by wyndell »

I just got dsl but am really confused. I have a lan with 3 computers. I just received my dsl (speedstream 5600) router modem. I plug modem in hub and all lights are green. But I dont know what to do next. Nothing on my computer even acts like it sees anything. I have ip addresses setup in my tcp connection for my nic (192.168.10.1, submask 255.255.255.0) the manual says i should use 10.0.0.1 with sbnet of 255.0.0.0. my isp says I should use 216.88.76.6. I dont have room for all these. I also see something about dhcp but dont know what that is. According the manual, plug it in and it works. please help
thanks

Ok.... i think i had a similar problem at one point. The way to fix this... easiest.. is to go to the startmenu and then run. Type in "winipcfg". You should get a program that comes up with a bunch of ip addresses. You will see a dropdown menu where you select your net card. click release all. you should have ip's that are a bunch of zeros. Then click refresh all, you should then have the appropriate ip address that will work.

Which operating system are you running?

I forgot to mention, you cannot run the modem off the hub. You will need two NIC cards on the computer to which you will connect the DSL modem. This is where you will enter the additional IP address.
