A moderate 5.3-magnitude earthquake that rattled southern Colorado early Tuesday morning was the largest to hit the state in more than 40 years, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake's epicenter was seven miles southwest of Cokedale, and 180 miles south of Denver. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

A dispatcher at the sheriff's office in Las Animas County, which includes Cokedale, said the quake lasted almost 30 seconds. The office received reports of rocks falling on a highway and of some structure damage.

It was the largest in a series of earthquakes that struck the area. As of 5 a.m. local time (7 a.m. ET), the USGS reported seven quakes centered just south of Cokedale since midnight.

Amy Vaughan of the USGS said the 5.3 magnitude ties that of an earthquake Colorado suffered on August 9, 1967.

In 1973, the USGS originally reported a quake with a magnitude of 5.7, but it turned out that was caused by an explosion, Vaughan said.

The largest recorded quake to hit Colorado had a magnitude of 6.5 on Nov. 7, 1882, near Rocky Mountain National Park, Vaughan said

We get an occasion 4-4.5 in NJ, no where near this powerful. We have a pair of broken pipes in the building.

There seems to be some goings on in the cosmos that we will all soon hear about. Perhaps this is why NASA has posted emergency initatives for their working families. Something is definately up, question is, what?

In South Carolina.. the building that I was working in was shaking.. Almost felt like I was in a train.. everyone one was looking at everyone else.. then started to say.. earthquake? So I brought up the USGS page on one of our overhead LCD monitor.. sure enough.. pretty wild.

The main difference between east coast quakes and west coats quakes is that the west coast plates have separations, thus there could be a small quake in Pasadena and not be felt 30 miles away, or feels like a convoy rolling down the street. On the east coast, the plate has no major separations, thus the vibrations of the energy wave travel further and stronger.

Feeling a quake is an odd sensation. One detects the massive amount of energy. But when there's no damage, such as collapsed buildings, the effect is strange. The motion one experiences is so unusual. And the real danger of small quakes like we just experienced is the hysteria generated by people. The phone circuits were jammed for hours, people evacuated buildings and then took the rest of the day off. Traffic backed up early. etc. etc. Remember those grammar school fire drills? That's what it looked like around here, the adults stood outside buildings, chattering about disasters & finding reasons not to continue the day's production, clutching the sensations as an excuse to go home early.

WTF is going on?!?!?!? I'm going to start stocking supplies..this don't look good!

7.0-magnitude earthquake strikes northern Peru
A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck northern Peru on Wednesday, authorities said.

The quake's epicenter was about 350 miles (570 kilometers) northeast of the country's capital, Lima, and 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Pucallpa, Peru, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Authorities at the Geophysics Institute of Peru said no victims or significant damage had been reported. At least one aftershock had been recorded, the institute said.

Lima residents felt a brief, but strong, tremor.

The quake struck around 12:45 p.m. near Peru's border with Brazil at a depth of about 90 miles (145 kilometers).
