Finally!! people are standing up to annoying cell phone usage!

Post by Sava700 »

I'm so glad this happened!! Perhaps it will start a trend to make people not talk on a phone so loud when around others or when you're not supposed as posted!! Man I can't wait till they are banned out right in theaters for even being on let alone talked on!! :thumb: :thumb:
SALEM, Ore. - Salem Police stopped an Amtrak train on Sunday afternoon after reports a woman threatened other passengers when they complained she was speaking too loudly on her cell phone.

Lakeysha Beard of Tigard was charged with disorderly conduct after police said she got into a “verbal altercation” with passengers on the train. The other passengers complained she refused to put down her cell phone, even after train staff made repeated announcements for passengers to not use cell phones, according to police.

When a passenger confronted her about her loud talking, police said Beard got aggressive. She had reportedly been talking non-stop on the phone since getting on the train in Oakland, Calif.

Beard was taken into custody until a family member could come and pick her up.

The train pulled out of the station in Oakland at 10 p.m. the night before, according to Amtrak spokeswoman Verae Graham. Conductors on the train coordinated with police to stop the train at a crossing about two miles from the Salem station. That was around 2 p.m.

The train was the Coast Starlight, which runs between Los Angeles and Seattle.

Graham said Amtrak has no formal policy that bans people from talking on cell phones while the train is moving.

KATU tried to contact Beard for comment but could not reach her.

The train was stopped for about 20 minutes before it continued on to Portland.

First off, you're an *******. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean its use should be curtailed. Control is just fine as long as it's something you don't like/disagree with, huh?

A train isn't an airplane; there should be no restriction on their use. That she became "aggressive" is her problem.

It's not just cause I don't like it, it's something that really causes a mental strain on others around you that in many places are their for some peace..some quiet time away from things such as phone conversations. I'm thinking you're the type that would bring a 2 year old out to eat to dinner with you too huh..while all those around you most likely found a sitter to get away from home to enjoy some peace and quiet.

As for this lady well she was asked to not be as loud then asked to stop not by just passengers but also by train staff which at that point I would imagin she's caused a nice little stir and was most likely showing her ass (a lot of it) at that point.
even after train staff made repeated announcements for passengers to not use cell phones, according to police.
Trains with a large amount of people in one area should have some sort of restriction on cell phone usage or any type of electronic usage if you're found to be disturbing others... something already unwritten most likely is already there if you stood up and started to chant or sing loud.

The issue is with the lady, but being mindful of where/when you use a cell phone is important also.

The should combine the smoking area with the cell phone area so both those annoyances can be confined to a small isolated area.

I don’t mind if people talk on the cell as long as they’re not loud and obnoxious apparently like this lady was. I hate when I’m talking to someone and they stop me to answer the phone. I feel like I’ve been interrupted. Almost all phones have caller ID, they can call the person back. It’s just a pet peeve of mine that people feel like it’s an emergency and they have to answer the phone right then and there. It is rarely an emergency.

Actually...that statement cannot be said with the limited information given. Amtrak usually has at least one car called "the quiet car". Talking out loud, talking on cell phones, watching movies on your laptop using the speakers...all that stuff, the care is treated just like you were at the library. Making noise...Amtrak staff will come up to you and ask you to be quiet. (so will other passengers). Keep it up..and you're told to leave. I love that car..it's what I take to NYC and back.

I know the quote above states that Amtrak spokesperson Verae Graham "said Amtrak has no formal policy that bans people from talking on cell phones while the train is moving."
I have no idea why an Amtrak spokesperson, who I just guessing works for Amtrak and I'd surmise that they sorta have a concept about the rules...doesn't know about the "quiet car". I've been taking Amtrak from my corner of CT to NYC several times per year to work at a client down there...and I know about that car. It has signs on it, it's labeled, it has the rules hanging on a sign front and back.
Here is a link to Amtraks website...the web master apparently found information on it and knew about it..

"Quiet Car

Many trains feature Quiet Car service, intended to provide a peaceful, quiet atmosphere for those who want to work or rest without distraction.

To help ensure that our Quiet Cars live up to their name, please follow the guidelines below.

Quiet Talking Only, Please: Customers must strictly limit conversation and speak only in quiet, subdued tones. If you'd like to carry on an extended conversation, please relocate to another car.

Mute Your Device: Customers may not use any devices making noise, including:

cellular phones
pagers
handheld games without headphones
laptop computers with audible features enabled
portable CD or DVD players without headphones
Customers using headphones must keep the volume low enough so that the audio cannot be heard by neighboring passengers.

Amtrak personnel may ask passengers who fail to follow these guidelines to relocate to another car.

Lighting and Luggage Bins: Conductors may dim overhead lighting, but reading lights may be used and emergency lights will remain lit. Luggage bin doors will remain closed during and between stops.

Seating: Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, and cannot be reserved. There is no additional charge for a seat in a Quiet Car.

To provide space for all who want to ride in the Quiet Car, passengers may occupy only one seat. Please do not use seat space for personal belongings.

Finding the Quiet Car: Announcements are made in stations and onboard trains indicating the location of the Quiet Car. You may also ask train personnel to direct you to the Quiet Car."

Ya the problem here is the woman's reaction. Talking normally on a cellphone in a train should be no big deal.

No, it prob wouldn't be so long as you didn't carry on a conversation that lasted the battery life or explained your medical history while sitting next to someone that didn't wish to hear it. Sorry, if I can hear you and I don't care for your conversation and language which may or may not be bad then I'm going to say something and I'm going to complain.

More to the story which has people cheering about it all over!! :thumb:

A woman who was escorted off an Amtrak train by police this weekend after she allegedly refused to stop talking loudly on her cell-phone has the Internet cheering her fate.

Civilians and quiet-car champions are supporting her ejection for violating policy at high volume during the 16-hour journey. It doesn't help her cause that she became belligerent when confronted about it by one of her fellow passengers.

KOMO News reports that Lakeysha Beard says she felt "disrespected" by the incident, though passengers said it was Beard who was being rude by refusing to stop yapping while sitting in one of the train's designated quiet cars. She had not stopped talking since the train pulled out of Oakland, California, 16 hours before it reached Salem, Oregon, when a passenger confronted her about the talking. That's when Beard got "aggressive," KATU reports, and conductors stopped the train so that police could remove her and charge her with disorderly conduct.
Amtrak created quiet cars in 2001 when a group of passengers who rode the Philadelphia to D.C. route every morning asked if they could reserve a car where cell-phone loudmouths weren't welcome. Ever since, the rare havens of quiet have become a battlefield between silence-loving rule-followers and rebellious cell-phone addicts. Gawker suggested, not without a dose of sincerity, that the cops who removed Beard from the train were heroes, and that Beard should be charged with "unspeakable crimes against humanity and sentenced to life on some distant planet where there are no reception bars, ever."

According to a very scientific reader poll at The Huffington Post, 77 percent of people were happy the woman was hauled off the train. And CNN personality Anderson Cooper blasted the woman on his "ridiculist" last night, asking "What could someone possibly talk about for 16 hours?" He even compared being stuck on the train with a person who would do such a thing to the "fifth circle of hell."

The Internet is full of tales of innocent people's quiet-car journeys being marred by loud passengers who ignore the rules. An Israeli blogger with a PhD in conflict resolution wrote a lengthy post about the best way to get a fellow passenger to shut up without starting World War III. "Always assume the transgressor is ignorant, not arrogant. This way you won't feel wronged and can communicate your message with less contempt and hostility," he suggests.

Meanwhile writer Christopher Buckley, a self-described quiet car Nazi, wonders why there would be any confusion as to the correct behavior in that part of the train: "The Quiet Car does not hide its light under a bushel. Prominent and explicit signs hang from the ceiling at five-foot intervals. They declare, unequivocally, that NO CELL PHONES ARE PERMITTED and that conversation must be kept to a minimum and in hushed tones."

I definitely overreacted and spoke too soon; here in Oklahoma our trains are for hauling cattle or grain, and I didn't know there were "quiet cars" and the like. While I stand firm on my point about subjective disgust, Sava has my apology.
