HP G71-329WM Boot Up Issue

Post by DIDS »

Hi All,

I am looking at my nephew's HP G71-329WM laptop that has an issue. When it turns on it immediately starts beeping and the Caps Lock light flashes 3 times stops and then flashes 3 times again and repeats the cycle. Nothing ever appears on the screen. It doesn't even show the BIOS boot. I checked on HP website and it indicates that 3 Flashes is a memory issue on the G71-300 and G71-400 they do not list the error codes for the G71-329.

My question is if it really is a memory issue wouldn't I still see at least the BIOS boot (Option screen to choose boot device)? I tried hooking it up to an external monitor and it still doesn't show anything. I also tried to put a Ubuntu CD in the drive and start the computer with that. I also tried to reseat the memory and still get the same result. Any idea's?

Thanks,

DIDS

I would believe the error code from HP's site.

Hi YoS,

Thanks for the reply.

Shouldn't I still see the BIOS bootup screen show even if somehow both the 2GB memory modules went bad in just over a year? I just want to make sure before I have them spend $80 on memory that the screen or motherboard isn't toast.

Thanks,

Not sure if it could be the same thing since your laptop's at least beeping, but had this issue with a friend's HP dv6000.

The solder on the video card fractures and keeps it from ever booting.

Hi Humboldt,

I don't think that is the issue since it doesn't use a graphics card. The video is onboard sharing the RAM. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Can you swap in any spare RAM from another laptop, or depending on how many sticks it has try 1 stick of RAM in different spots?

Memory is a requirement to POST.

Thanks for the replies guys. I got ahold of another working G71-329WM (niece's) and swaped the memory but still have the same issue. Not sure where to go from here. I assume the Motherboard must be damaged.

Thanks,
