Need info on setting up DMZ HalfLife

Post by FingerDemon »

I posted a question about this before, but I think a poor choice of words made everybody think I was looking for someone to DO this for me. But I just want to figure out how to control the multiple pings sent out by Half Life server listing. And maybe learn a little about setting up a CS or TFC server. What settings do you use for DMZ, the SMC instructions are very vague.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

No, actually I have an SMC Barricade 4 port router with NAT. It has a nice web interface for DMZ, but I have no idea what I need to make it work.

Read here what G-Code is saying, it's pretty much the same, just different brand. http://forums.speedguide.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=7&t=001164

The IP address he's talking about will be the one you add into your DMZ window. That one will be your game server pc.

27015 is the port number that the game plays through/uses.

Thanks for that link, that gave me enough to try something out and it worked. I can now get server listings without locking up my router with multiple pings. However, I had to put my PCs ip routing address in there, doesn't that leave my whole pc outside the firewall protection of the NAT router? Maybe I will try putting the port number to, to limit access to Halflife game. If my whole machine has to be outside the firewall, I will just try to set up my old machine to run the server on and strip all personal files out of it. What's the minimum speed and memory to run a decent cs or tfc server on? This one is pretty old, but I was thinking about rebuilding it on the cheap and maybe even running linux on it.

Thanks again for help,

Yes, when you put your pc in the DMZ, you are putting it out in the open. I just assumed you were aware of that.

Yeah, I would use a stripped down machine with nothing you mind losing. You also could probably put a software firewall on it, like zonealarm or similar and set it to let certain traffic through. I'm not real sure if it will effect the operation of the server though.

Actually, I used ZoneAlarm prior to getting the router and I think I just had to allow HL.exe to act as server and it worked OK. I will also try adding the port number to the IP. Thanks for the info.
