Slow Wired AT&T Connection

Post by benitolim »

So I have realized after about half a year that I have been not getting the speeds that were advertised in the internet service I am currently paying for. I do not get download speeds higher than 160 Kb/s, regardless whether it is a direct download or P2P download.

1. I have a DSL connection (PPPoE)

2. My ISP is AT&T and their advertised speeds for my plan are downstreams of up to 1.5 Mb/s and upstreams of up to 128 Kb/s.

3. « SpeedGuide.net TCP Analyzer Results »

Your speeds already look pretty good. When tweaking we hope to get 90% of our connection speed in a best case scenarion. You are getting more than 90% of your download. Your upload speed is about 300kb on your speed test which is faster than your provisioned speed. You can try the fallowing setting in TCP Optimizer.

Try the following with TCP Optimizer:

General Settings tab:
Custom settings - check
Modify All Network Adapters - check
network adapter selection - your NIC
MTU - 1480
TTL - 64
Checksum Offloading : enabled 0
Windows Scaling - uncheck
TCP Receive Window - 63360
MTU Discovery - Yes
Black Hole Detect - No
Selective Acks - Yes
Max Duplicate ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options:
Timestamps - uncheck

Advanced Settings :

--- Internet Explorer Optimization---
Max Connections per Server : 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server : 10

--- Host Resolution Priority ---
LocalPriority : 5
Host Priority : 6
DNSPriority : 7
NetbtPriority : 8

--- LAN Tweaks ---
Lan Browsing speedup : optimized
LAN Request Buffer Size : 32768

--- Dynamic Port Allocation ---
MaxUserPor : 65535
TcpTimedWaitDelay : 30

--- Type/Quality of Service ---
QoS: NonBestEffortLimit : 0
ToS: DisableUserTOSSetting : 0
ToS: DefaultTOSValue : 0

--- DNS Error Caching ---
NegativeCacheTime : 0
NetFailureCacheTime : 0
NegativeSOACache Time : 0

--- Gaming Tweak - Disable Nagle's algorithm ---
TcpAckFrequency : Enabled 1
TCPNoDelay : Enabled 1
TcpDelackticks : default n/a

Then "Apply Changes" & Reboot
After that, post your new TCP Analyzer

Just finished talking to AT&T support, and they said it was probably due to my residence being so far away from the central hub.

Planning on canceling my DSL and switching over to cable. Anyone have any recommendations for the Los Angeles area?

You are getting the speeds you are paying for. Did you ask them if you could be upgraded to 3mb? As long as your with in like 12k ft. you should be able to get 3mb.

Hmm, I guess I can talk to them again and ask them about the 3 MB plan.

I may just be ignorant, but is 150-160 kb/s download speed the norm for the service I have? I'm slightly confused...

You are paying for 1.5Mbit Download Speed and 128kbit Upload

1.0Mbit= 130KB/s 1.5Mbit= 187KB/s

You Get 160KB/s when maximum DL-speed is 187KB/s

Are you getting it NOW!? :thumb:

Ugh I'm an idiot.

Thanks for being so patient with me guys; I guess the speeds I am currently getting aren't suiting my needs, so I'll be switching ISPs or looking at the different plans AT&T has.
