General discussion related to Cable Modems, DSL, Wireless, Fiber, Mobile Networks, Wireless ISPs, Satellite, or any other type of high-speed Internet connection, general issues and questions here. Review and discuss ISPs as well (AT&T / SBC, BellSouth, Bright House, CableOne, Charter, Comcast, Covad, Cox, Cablevision / Optimum Online, TMobile, Verizon FIOS, Shaw, Telus, Starlink, etc.)
I have a very strange problem that has been persistent ever since I got cable internet. My upload performance is awful even though my speeds and signals are fine. Youtube vids load ridiculously slow. Even 1 minute videos. Pictures and sections of websites load slow and pop up individually instead of a fluent load. Gaming online is almost unplayable due to upload performance. Ive tried changing splitters, had the modem replaced, had the cable cord from the drop replaced. Im not even 100% sure if its an upload problem but the symptoms points to that.
chalieboy wrote:Its not computer related. Problem persists on more than 1 computer in the house and even on xbox 360 while every other device is turned off.
Try this NDT and see what it say under 'Statistics' and 'More Details'

Seems you have got a 5/1 Mbps line.
Test shows no problems with the line, but do mentioned receiver limited 90%
Make sure no power or signal cables are coiled up.

chalieboy wrote:I dont see how thats possible when speedtests show i have 22 download. And what exactly does power or signal cables coiled up mean?
The 22mbps is powerboost or whatever RR calls it. You're upload is fine, more than enough for online games and viewing websites/vidoes is related to your download.
Odd that you have an issue considering your speedtest results.

ya its powerboost but the line should be 15/1 with powerboost. And like I said, the upload on the speedtest looks fine, but does not perform like its .73mbs.
Sometimes we may have laid an excess length of electrical cable, maybe for power supply, or a CAT 5E ethernet cable.
To keep things tidy we can either coil it up or tie it in a bundle. A coil generates electromagnetic field that can disrupt the relatively weak signals flowing in the cable.
Thus, it is better to bundle the excess length of cable.
Is it just slow or is it hanging as if its hitting speed bumps??
Try this
download and run http://www.pingplotter.com use the free version and set the intervals to 1second tests to any site say http://www.google.com. Test it during different times of the day for say 30mins to an hour each like in the morning and then during peak times at night and lets see if your having packet loss. Also I'm curious to know if you've contacted RR yet on this issue?

Its really hard to say if its hanging or if its hitting speed bumps. It just webpages dont load fluently (each packet will load individually), youtube vids load extremely slow, video games are horrible (shots never register, getting killed around corners). The internet only works well like once every couple weeks. I dont wanna say this 100% but it seems like when it rains, my internet works better.
And Ive had so many problems and so many techs out this summer I dont want to call again. Before our node was overloaded and i was only getting 3mbs. We canceled, then we got a call saying it was fixed so we ordered it again. The speeds were fixed, but this problem still persisted.
There's really no point of calling Timewarner because all they will probably tell me is that my speeds are looking more than fine and my signals are great. Thats all they care about.

Do what I asked as far as using ping plotter and lets see what happens.
trogers wrote:Could be some loose connector along the line outside the house, and water bridged the gap?
theres only 2 lines, the one from the drop to the ground block, and from the ground block to the modem. Unless the the line from the drop is loose which i doubt.
Im trying pingplotter right now. I highly doubt it has anything to do with packetloss and latency though.
idk why it would say that, im not using any firewall, on my computer or the router. Im using the newest version of Firefox though. Shouldnt make a difference because this problems happens on all systems.

Using just basic windows firewall is fine and more than enough.. depending on the model router it prob has a hardware firewall built in. I guess my newest suggestion for just testing purposes would be to download malwarebytes anti-malware, update it and run a full scan just to see what it finds...you may have a infection causing the problems.

Im 100% sure its not an infection. I usually turn off all computers in my house and restart both my router and modem when I play my xbox online and the problem.
Im starting to think its just a problem outside my control. Its weird though because they already claim my node has been split. Something could be causing noise from someone elses connection on our pole. My buddy who lives right down the street, hes probably on a different node than I am, but his internet works flawless and his speeds are nowhere near as good as mine.
Sava700 wrote:Ok have you called your ISP and have them out to look over everything?
they have been out so many times before the node was split. What reason would they have to come out now? The speeds look fine and so do the signals. Timewarner isnt a very cooperative company lol
Ive changed connectors, the line from the drop, the line going from the modem to the connector ground block. I guess all I have to do is pray that Uverse comes to my street.

You changed connectors? What connectors did you use.. did you properly install them? Try to remove any electrical items such as a lamp or speakers away from the modem also.

The connector thats connected to the ground block. Im not sure what the technical name for it is but i made sure I properly installed them. I also made sure electrical devices didnt interfere but it made no difference so I put my modem and router back to the original set up. We have a 2 part house and my aunt lives in Florida. She has a TW line as well and I even tried using hers but it didnt make a difference.
When you changed the connectors I assume you mean splitters? Are you using ones supplied by the cable company or ones from a local store? You want to make sure you use good quality splitters rated 5-1000mhz.

Dont splitters split more than 1 line though? This is just 2 ends that connects to the ground block? But yes they are supplied by the company.
Rocky_Grim wrote:Did you replace the cable line between the ground block and the modem, or you replaced the f connectors that screw onto the ground block?
I replaced the line from the ground block to the modem twice. They were not new cable lines though. They seemed to be in good shape though.

I've seen line go bad without it looking like anything has touched it... caused mostly from surges. Might want to request a new drop put in if you can get it.
