Going to pick up some more old hardware..

Post by Shinobi »

Hmmm don't know how the title of my post got messed up like that.. :-P

Someone else at work has tons of computer parts at there house from a past business, and is letting me go thru it all before its gets tossed. I know that there is there is a 15 inch CRT monitor that I can use on one of my systems (I'm getting tired of using remote desktop or VNC to access the headless ones).

A whole bunch of parts memory, hard drives, keyboards and mice Oh My! :D

Where do you draw your lines for "too old"?
I still have a little tendency to snag older P4 systems..but I'd accumulate so much of it, I had to recently raise my bar as to what I'd keep. So now older "H/T" P4s head to the dumpster, I'll keep Dual Core and on up system now.

Starting to want to get all my home systems towards mini-itx and power efficient systems.

My next "basement/parts" cleaning expedition at home, I'll post what's going first before tossing it.

CRTs are too power hungry, you can get some cheap small LCDs these days.

The only CRT I would take is the Sony FW900.

Probably Pentium 3's and higher.. I can still make a nice web surfing box / other with higher end P3's.. definitely with Pentium 4's and AMD Equivalents. I would like to put one more workstation in my guest room, and another small one in my bed room. I don't have a wired LAN in my house (for the exception of my main office), just wireless.

I just need a one or two monitors for the 2 headless workstations I have. And free, is better than cheap. CRT's do use a bit more energy, that's what Power Management is for.

A bit as in say, 1.5x to 2x more, and there is power management for LCDs as well.

Get one of those cheap 15" Hanns Gs or something for like 60 bucks and in a couple years or so its efficiency will pay for itself.

I hold on to very little in the case of old computer parts. It seems like everyone hangs onto them like they're some sort of keepsake. My brother is on his 3rd or 4th laptop and I'm always asking him to sell me one of the old ones but he says he doesn't way to because they have files on them and they mean a lot to him. Hell, transfter the files and sell the damn thing. It's just a freakin box of electronic parts.

Sometimes people amaze me.. Someone else at work said they had a 15 inch LCD monitor that they were going to "give me". The 15" LCD monitor turned in to a 17" NCR AccuSync monitor.

Not a wide screen, but I don't care about that.. really nice screen.. Sometimes people are do really nice things still in this world..

You mean an NEC? CRT or LCD?

I loved my old NEC 19" Diamondtron.

So.. I saw my Dad the other day, and he was clearing out some computer stuff. He wanted to know if I wanted the following and I said uh.. "ya" :)

QTY 2, matching pair of 1 GB DDR 400MHZ Corsair , still in the package.
QTY 4, 512 MB of DDR 400MHZ Corsair
QTY 2 BFG Technologies GEForce 6800 GT OC PCI-E video cards. 256MB (not sure if it is DDR or DDR2 for the memory, they need either "two" molex power supply connectors, or one.. 4 pin . 6 volt? I think.)
One ATI Video card, unknown model and memory.. TBD..
One AMD Athlon 3000+ CPU and an nice vantec heatsink and fan.
I got two systems that can take the memory, and two other workstations for at least two of the video cards.. I think they are better then what I have currently... still comparing the specs.

Then I saw a friend after that I have not seen in a long time. He gave me a APC UPS! I really needed another one.. battery is pretty new also..

A very happy hardware year for sure.

Welcome to Speed guide. :)

Ok! I will throw all CRT's in the landfill, or off of a private road into the forest..
And will do the same with all of my older computers that were originally destined for the same fate. ;)
