SOME QUAKE 3 QUESTIONS - HeLp!

Post by Maximus »

hey guys
for those of you that play quake 3, you might be able to help me. ok, i really like playing multiplayer, and i enjoy playing ctf with a lot of other players. but the only thing is that the winning team's (at that time) names are at the top. this means that if your losing, you're at the bottom. ok, if there are 10 or 11 people on the winning team, and you're on the losing team, there's no way to see your team and how many frags you have!!! well, my question is, "Is there a way?" I just want to be able to see everyone in the game, and how many frags they/I have. if anyone knows, reply please.
i'm gettin kinda frustrated

second question: I want to start a server for the clan i'm heading up this summer (Gladiators, hence the name Maximus... ). When i go into the "create" section of the multiplayer section, i set the "DEdicated field" to "Internet". meaning that anyone can join this server. then, it exits the game and goes into that blue console you see at the beginning, and freezes!!
IF i'm doing anything wrong, or need to do anything differently to get a game going, tell me pPLEASE!! thanks

um... well i'm not sure on your first question but on your second one:

Do you mean it actually freezes at the consol? Can you type in commands on the text line? I think you're just confused on what a dedicated server is.

When you set up a dedicated server it runs a consol which IS the server, it doesn't go back into the game like a regular server. The reason for this is, well if you were running a server 24/7 would you really want the game open ALL the time? That kinda renders your computer useless.

What you need to do now is just open up q3 again and connect to your IP.

thanks haZZard,
i didn't realize this
one more question, how do i know that the server is ready and up, so i can go back in and connect to my ip?

The consol will be up when the server is running.

Make sure you don't close the consol cuz that is the server.

in win95 or 98 just go to Start->Run & type "winipcfg" (w/o the quotes)

in win2k go to the command prompt & type "ipconfig"

Is upload more important for serving a game?

Also, would a higher download speed give lower pings?

Yes, upload is the most important factor in hosting a game server. I'm not exactly sure what specific speeds you need to reach, it really depends on the game. But I know that w/ my 128K upload cap (16KB/sec) I can only host a MAXIMUM of 2 other people before it lags out in Quake3Arena. Quake2 I could host 3 or 4, sometimes 5.
