Simple File/Printer Share (Vista)

Post by ARS »

OS: Vista 64bit
2 computers
1 printer

I am setting up a printer share between TWO computers. The main computer (a) has the Lexmark printer hooked up via USB. After sharing the printer out I tried to locate it on the network within the 2nd computer (b), nothing. I tried to share a folder/file out on main computer, and vice-versa, neither can see each other on the network.

I ensured File/Print Sharing was enabled via the Network shares, or however Vista labels it. I ensured no Auth is needed (no login info) The network is setup PRIVATE, not public, etc. They are both utilizing the same DNS/Network. Same workgroup was set.

What am I doing wrong? It is pretty cut dry on setting up... I: even followed an online guide: http://www.home-network-help.com/vista- ... aring.html , for the printer side, same for the folder side, still nothing showing within the network on either computers.
Ugh?
Any insight is much appreciated....!

Thanks,

Anthony

Sometimes I just go to Network Places --> Entire Network --> Microsoft Windows Network --> Dbl Click On The Work group --> Dbl Click On The PC With The Printer Attached.

The printer (if shared) should show up there, dbl click on it and install it that way.

In Vista, it is something along those lines, but I do believe different...? I do choose the entire network, but am only showing the local computer there and what it has shared out; Not the other computer nor a workgroup selection within the entire network.

How are these PC's networked together?

Are they on the same subnet, something like 192.168.1.x

Can you ping from one to the other?

Find the ip address of one PC /ipconfig

From the other PC see of you can ping it.

I can ping the IP's from each computer. They are on the same network using the same subnet, dns, etc.

Blop. NetBIOS Enabled within TCP/IP Properties. Frustrating that something so easy is turning into a pain in the arse, heh.

Any 3rd party firewalls being used on either PC?
Even if just the Windows firewall...for now, just for testing/setting up, disable the firewall on each PC. When done..turn it back on.
Network Discovery Service turned on?
Did you get replies when you ran a ping to each computer from the other?

Yeah, network discovery service is running. No other firewalls other than Windows which indeed was disabled until the issue is resolved. I was able to ping each computer from each other....

I am stumped. Baffled. Mind-boggled. Even thinking about it gives me a headache. I'll sit down for a few minutes at it... you know... thinking SOMETHING may come to me while I try EVERY step I've tried already just to ensure I did not miss a step. Hell, I have ran over the steps a million and one times.... and I am SHOT of ideas. In other words, lol, ANY ideas is Much appreciated. If you think it is stupid, or not worth the time, please spill it. I am at loss here.

Back to the pool, grill n beer. Time to finish the relaxation up until the reality of real world kicks back in after this elongated weekend :)

Happy Memorial Day everyone! :)

Cheers,

Perhaps put this in the Software forum? As it does seem software/otpions type issue?

Any assistance is, of course, MUCH appreciated.
