GPU folders 'INPORTANT INFO'

Post by rickoic »

Stanford is preparing to unleash GPU3.

Vijay Pande released info today the 24th about what you will need to do to get prepared for the release.

Basically all you have to do is to update Cuda to version 2.2 or better, looks like version 3.0 is out at the present time, so if you go to http://www.nvidia.com and download and install the latest drivers for nvidia which appears to be 195.36 or higher.

Following table will indicate which Cuda drivers you have.
CUDA 2.0: 177.35+
CUDA 2.1: 180.60+
CUDA 2.2: 185.85+
CUDA 2.3: 190.38+
CUDA 3.0/OpenCL: 195.36+

GPU3 will allow for greatly enhanced science (including more accurate models, new science can be done, 2x faster execuation of the science, more stable simulations, OpenCL support for run time science optimizations, and greater flexibility for adding new scientific capability).

If you go ahead and update now, you should be ready to go when Stanford releases.

Ok, GPU3 for Nvidia GPU's has been released for testing.

PPD is less folding GPU3's than for GPU2's, but that has been expected for a long time in that the PPD for Nvidia cards would decrease as size of work units increased. I've noticed about a 500 ppd drop for each GPU so far, which is why I've only converted 3 of my 7.

Rick

So your saying don't upgrade the drivers?

Eventually everyone will have to upgrade because as I understand it GPU2 is scheduled to be phased out in the future. How soon I don't know.

GPU3 is the next phase in GPU folding and as such is bigger and (better)?

Because there has been a disparity between PPD between ATI and NVIDIA since GPU2 has been brought out they didn't address this as their thinking was that as bigger wu's were produced the PPD differance would even out.

Well GPU3 is the beginning of the evening out. However, there has been some discussion with Dr. Pande about adjusting the PPD, and he has said that they will look into it, so if you see the P10626 and P10627 wu's on the projects go above 610 and 611 then the adjustment has been made.

Whether you want to switch or not is up to you. I'm going to go ahead and switch all my GPU's over to GPU3.
