3G Wireless Router (using cell phone)

Does anyone know if this is currently an option? I use PDANet on my Droid Eris to connect my laptop when we are on road trips (instead of paying for hotel internet). Is it possible to apply this same thought to a 3G router and have multiple users share the connection? I thought someone may have already used/tried this.

usually i did this

phone -> laptop then shared by WIFI -> others laptop (my laptop as hotspot)

but, Android 2.2(Froyo) can be turned a droid phone into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot that can be shared with up to 8 devices

I would update if only that were an option. Right now verizon is still in their OTA for 2.1. I have been running a leak of 2.1 for a while but 2.2 is not even on the radar yet... it is still in the works as I understand it and nowhere on Verizon's release schedule currently...

This looks grim for me... the Eris was a 2009 release :-/

I spoke with a guy at Best Buy yesterday (pondering a phone swap to the Incredible) and was just talking to him about the specs on the incredible and the reduced battery life from the Eris. And then guy said if I am not up for a new phone, I would have to pay full price for it ($600). I thought it was just a new contract (bringing me to two full years) and then the $200. Anyway, if his info is correct then I am stuck for a while. There is no friggin way I am going to pay $600 for a phone (some computers cost less).

I think I am just going to have a buy a "developer phone" ;-)
