Newer computer, probably a new SATA hard drive controller that XP can't work with.
Can try to download the controller driver to a floppy drive..since that's the only way old XP install could import a controller driver when hitting F-6 during setup.
Or research on how to slipstream the drivers into a custom install.
Or..easiest..go into the computers BIOS and see if there are any "legacy" settings for the SATA controller....install XP using that, then install the SATA drivers and motherboard drivers for it, and then can flip back to SATA native mode for better performance.

disable ahci & try again
reenable after you've installed the mb chipset drivers and sata drivers.

Okay, this has worked. So i now have4 Partitions.
"305243MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]
-: Partition1 [FAT] 118MB < 109MB free>
F: Partition2 <Recovery> [FAT32] 10240MB <10227MB free>
C: Partition3 <OS> [NTFS] 247326MB <176697MB free>
D: Partition4 <New Volume> [NTFS] 47559MB <40270MB free>
118MB Disk on Disk [MBR]
E: Partition1 [FAT] 122MB <7MB free>"
The new volume partition is where i backed all my files up to. Recovery was formatted, and is empty. Should i overwrite Partition 3? As this is the Vista OS that i no longer wish to use?
Also, can i delete any of these partitions? Cause i want as much free space as possible.
Thanks

I have done the above and am now on Windows XP. But im missing some drivers.
PCI Device, Network Controller and Biometric Coprocessor.
The Coprocessor i think is for the fingerprint reader on my laptop, which i dont use so not fussed about that.
Even without the network controller, i can get online, so not too bothered about that.
But the PCI device, a sound driver i think? It doesnt allow me to play games etc without it. I just a million error messages upon starting my games .exe
I cant get a download thats compatible from Dell, as they only offer me Vista 32-bit OS drivers. Which obviously dont work.
Any help?
Thanks

Hard to say without knowing the make/model of computer.
Some of the more entry level home grade models...they're using new hardware that hasn't had drivers offered for legacy operating systems. Sometimes worth checking into that ahead of time before formatting.
Curious why you're dumping Vista? It's performance has gotten pretty solid with all the service packs and updates released since it came out.

Sorted. Just need to get back to AHCI from ATA.... I found this guide....
I hope this hasn't been posted yet.
Well, I wanted to install XP in my 1720 and even though I tried to integrate the SATA AHCI driver to my XP SP2 Disc, I could never get the windows installation to detect my HD's.
Instead, I had to disable AHCI in the Bios and that allowed me to install XP.
After the XP installation, I followed this guide in order to enable AHCI once again:
This is the installation procedure needed to enable AHCI after XP has been installed:
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=457699
I just tried this myself and it worked...
Now, the chipset in question (1720) is the ICH8M Mobile with a Device ID of
DEV_2829 or DEV_2828
So just replace all instances of the DEV_27C5 with DEV_2828 or DEV_2829
After following the guide, you can update the drivers using Intel's latest AHCI drivers.
Instructions:
1) Make sure AHCI is not enabled in your BIOS, otherwise this guide is pointless for you.
2) Back up your Windows folder and prepare a boot disk in case this guide fails!
3) Download 79im05ww.exe from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...cid=MIGR-62909
4) Extract the file to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\SATA.
5) If you have the ICH7M southbridge, go to step 8.
5) Open C:\DRIVERS\WIN\SATA\PREPARE\IMSM_PRE.inf in Notepad.
6) Replace any instance of DEV_27C5 with the following, according to your southbridge:
ICH6R - DEV_2652
ICH6M - DEV_2653
ICH7R - DEV_27C1
ICH7DH - DEV_27C1
ICH7M - DEV_27C5
ICH8 Mobile - DEV_2828 or DEV_2829 (you can check for this value in the device manager, under IDE / ATA Atapi Controller)
7) Save the file and close Notepad.
8) Click Start, select Run.
9) In the Open field type C:\DRIVERS\WIN\SATA\PREPARE\INSTALL.CMD and click OK.
10) Restart your computer, and enable AHCI on in your BIOS Setup.
11) Start Windows XP or Windows 2000. The Found New Hardware wizard will start automatically.
12) If running Windows XP:
1. Click No, not this time then click Next.
2. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), then click Next.
3. Select Search for the best driver in these locations.
4. Select Include this location in the search: and specify the path, C:\DRIVERS\WIN\SATA, and click Next
AFTER you have followed all of these instructions, you still have to install the intel matrix storage manager driver from intel to utilize ahci (the above instructions allow you to enable ahci in your bios, but you still need the driver to get full functionality). go to;
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filt...4&submit=Go%21
and download
RAID/AHCI Software - Intel® Matrix Storage Manager
current version as of this post is; 7.8.0.1012, date 11/9/2007
if the above link for the intel matrix storage manager goes down, you can search for intel matrix storage manager on the intel site to find it.
install the intel matrix storage manager driver. done.
But the link on Step:3 has expired... Any help?

Try using a disk of XP with SP3 slip streamed... if you need a OEM iso I will let you download it from my private FTP so you can burn to a disk..it may be just the disk your using causing something to go astray.Advent wrote:No help available on this matter? Struggling.
Tried googling 79im05ww.exe but no joy...
