I Have A Problem!

Post by Advent »

Firstly, apologies if this is the wrong section.

I have just reinstalled Windows Vista SP1 to my Dell XPS Laptop, and upon completion and attempting to put the internet back on, it says im missing a bunch of devices.

These are;-

Base System Device
Base System Device
Base System Device
Biometric Coprocessor
Ethernet Controller
Network Controller

Obviously i cannot go online and get these devices/drivers so i thought id use this computer to download them, put on a USB Stick and simply transfer them over. But upon doing so i open them to install, and get the 'Open with..' prompt, to which i just get a face full of coding and such.

Im at a loss...

Thanks in advance for any help, much appreciated.

what file format are the drivers? Also did you disable uac and have admin rights in vista?

If you did all that did you try adding the devices in device manager that device properties and update drivers?

the drivers you download directly from Dell are in stand alone executable's did you download via the download manager from their site or did you do them one at a time through the browser?

Hey, thanks finally sorted my internet out. Problem solved. Thanks! Have a new problem, however.

I wish to install Windows XP SP2, of which i have a disk.

But upon trying to my system says i have no drivers installed. I looked up some "How to.." videos on YouTube about converting and it seems a common problem. This video is the clearest iv came across http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZFzkJyGxbM
However, when im at the stage of downloading the driver at 1.13 (time on vid). When i get the driver its not in the same format as his. Its a single file, not a compressed file.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

You are prob missing the hard drive driver from what I can gather.. you will notice a little "Hit F6 to install ..." right at the start of the XP install screen. You will need to tap F6 and upon doing this have the driver downloaded for your motherboard which ever it is and usually found on the manufactures website put on a floppy disk so the drive will be recognized for the install. Also you could check the BIOS first to see if there is a ACHI/ATA setting that needs to be switched before starting since this will sometimes cause that error.
