A so called "computer expert"...

Post by Easto »

About a year ago I gave a computer to a friend at work. Later he had his nephew who knew all about computers come over, upgrade the OS etc etc. And I was told everything was working great!

I went by my friends house the other day to take a look at it and see what I might be able to do to increase the speed and clean it up.

Well, his "expert" nephew only had one of the mem modules seated properly so it was only running with half of the installed memory. The FSB was set at 100 when it should have been at 166. So after a few clicks and pushes he got what seemed like a new computer.

I think all his nephew did was install some pirated apps. Yep, he's an expert.

If it was not seated properly, would it not even boot up?

Here's my fun story for the day....pretty much on topic.
One of my clients, an accounting firm, picked up a new client...a telephone/utility company. So my client, the accountant, has to remote into a workstation at the phone company to run the accounting software. The guy who takes care of the IT for the phone company sends over the info to remote access it. PcAnywhere. :wth: Version 10.5. :wth: :wth:

Who the heck still uses PcAnywhere in the past..oh..nearly 10 years.

This story actually goes back a few weeks. The initial setup, the host wasn't answering the call. I e-mail their computer dude (I actually used to work with this many moons ago at another computer consulting firm). So he goes and check out the host machine...it had gotten hit with malware, it had outdated antivirus on it. :wth: Uhm...the day you go setup this host machine, you'd notice that, and ensure it was setup properly, no? :wth: :wth: So he spybot'd it 'n whatever, got it working. This morning my accountant called me, to setup remote printing, within PcAnywhere. So I just got done with that onsite visit...I remoted into the PcAnywhere host at the phone company from my accountants workstation....machine sluggish as heck. And what antivirus program do I see on it? AVG Free. :wth: :wth: Not only does that account for the sluggishness, but AVG is quite useless for protection, and it's against licensing to use the free version for business computers. Adding insult to injury, I had to go download the drivers from HPs website....with the AVG web protection browser toolbar making the experience painfully slow, since this workstation was "upgraded" in true fashion from Windows 2000...and the add-driver wizard was looking for the .cab files which weren't copied to the hard drive.
