Limiting bandwidth on a network's incoming connections...

Post by NITROFiST »

A Good friend of mine started a buessines so i may have a new job soon yay!
hard to find a good job thease days :(

anyway ill get right too the point this firend of mine is great with building pc's
but when it comes to networking he and I are in the same boat to be blunt
we both HATE networking....

he's got 15 computers all hooked up too a network
he called me up to see if i could help him out
he's trying to just get everything setup and limit bandwidth on
Incoming connections and some of them he wants limited by IP (If Posible)

I figured Id give QoS a look but it didn't turn out too well as it limited his whole
network and lagged it all and that's not what he wanted

He want's it to be like so many sites out there do it where your download/upload speeds are caped

and it's a minimum of like 100kbs or something so it doesn't lag the network too bad
making everything really slow

so I figured why not try this place out since it was recommended by one of
my friends at my current location he said he had a problem in the past and
was resolved by this site

so I hope theres some network guru here who can point me in the right direction
whether it be hardware too buy or software I'm all ears please send me your best advice

Is this an internet cafe?
What kind of internet usage will be typical for this network?

yes sir! but it's a bit more then that to be honest it's more like a deli with internet access

as you can see without some sort of bandwidth management
things could get little dicey

especially since he plans to add wireless access points too

oh man that would be quite a list we have tried everything from Antamedia
too even programs like netlimiter (netlimiter didn't limit anything! lol...)

im starting to think hardware might be the best option at this rate
theres got to be something out there with advanced QoS options
:(

man networking sure gives me a headache

you might want to take a look at this little firewall...you can get a descent computer to run it on and you should have a great deal of control.

thank you for your input.
while it might not help me with QoS on our network this is still a very nice find

since we still aren't sure of which firewall is suited us best yet either so i will definitely give this a look
