Left for Dead 2

Post by Faust »

picked the demo off Steam (got bored when QL was down overnight a lil while back).

reminds me of the old Soldier of Fortune feel. lots of attention paid to surgical removel of limbs with a shotgun, and copious amounts of gore.

the co-op online mode was kinda fun. was one of the things i used to like about Serious Sam (think it was SS2 with the coop, but coulda been both).

kinda worth the download if youve no other games to play. not sure id pay $45 or whatever theyre asking for it atm.

Went looking for this demo recently...but realized you need Steam to download it, was hoping it was a normal stand alone download. I hated Steam a while ago, dunno if I want to infect my computer with it again just for a demo.

lol yeah I havent had Steam installed for years. when i flew out to the folks' i caught up on my reading-off-paper, and PC Mag had Steam in their top 100 computer products. remembered that when ql was down and decided to see if its any different now than it was 4 years ago.... which it isnt. :p

Why do you hate it Brian? Just curious, I have it on my rig and haven't had any issues with it. Has some really cool features tbh. I just got Farcry 2 off steam for $9.99. Worth every penny.

You can get Left 4 Dead for $7.49 off of Steam. They have these huge holiday sales. Hell, Borderlands is now just $33.49 and it's a brand new release which is down from the usual $49.99.

$7.49? hmm i may actually get that. i could use a game for when im all quake live'd out. i suppose that is the true value to Steam... more or less like a game catalog. much appreciated, bud :)

I'm against that "limewire-ish" method it uses to carve out a folder in your hard drive and basically have it revealed on their end.

I supposed another part of it, me being an old fashioned guy...I much prefer to have the installation media in my hands. I know...with todays faster broadband connections downloading the game installer isn't a big deal, just...I'd like the disk(s) in my hand.

I also remember years ago when first using Steam..it was so dang sluggish, and to have that program running in the background all the time just to go play games. If I recall (and this may no longer be true)...you couldn't play your games single player without an internet connection so Steam could authenticate when you launch it. True other games run stuff like Punkbuster in the background..but that's not nearly as intrusive IMO.

Non-the-less...just a few minutes ago I downloaded Steam...and am downloading L4D2 demo right now.

cool! fyi at the top of the (l4d 2) game menu you can keep scrolling to the right to set up a single-player game. beats having to join an online coop to get your controls/settings worked out (like i did, which was a source of irritation for the other players im sure).

sucks theres only 2 levels, but still fun. i went and dropped the $7.49 on the first one as well. still fun, and the cost is right up my alley. just cant budget the full price of L4D 2 at this point.

I'm the exact same way, can't stand digital downloads. I want that disk in my hand, I can re-sell the disk which is what I like to do after I'm done with a game...otherwise I'm stuck with it.

Played for a while this afternoon..single and multi. Fun for a few minutes..then gets old. Wish you could do some more serious one on one with elbows and frying pans. Soon as you whack a zombie a few times with the pan, your coop teammates shoot them on you. But the sound of the frying pan against their skulls is a satisfying bong!

lol yeah, cheap thrills. but the myriad highly splattery ways one can dismember or otherwise cause massive trauma to a zombie is amusing. after that it is pretty redundant. good way to relieve stress between other gaming sessions. :p

Yeah I'm working on that now...trying different ways of just using my hands, or whacking someone with whatever object is in my hand. So far the cast iron skillet is my favorite. But just going in with a pistol and smacking them upside their head is fun.

Replay value is diminishing though...another day or two and I'll be done.

The installation of Steam may get me loading up good old Half Life again though. :) That was a fun multiplayer game.

true that. think i can only manage 15 minutes of splatterfest at a time. makes an amusinf distraction, but im feeling compelled to look 'round some more. friend of mine was raving about Borderlands. cant seem to find a demo, though.

i still have a few hl2 mods from back then. think it was Lost Coast where you could drive the walkers around and cause wreckage.

I didn't get too much into the HL mods..I knew there was lots of them. I just really enjoyed the game in multiplayer mode...leaving trip bombs, shooting the crossbow, sneaking up behind people and whumping them with the crowbar..those were good times. There was one particular outdoors type canyon level I really enjoyed.

I got left 4 dead 2 and I'd say it isn't bad, but I just hope that Valve will make updates... That's really all I can say. I mean the maps are great and all but unless they can update it to make it more different from Left 4 Dead then I would probably just wince. I mostly bought it though in fear most people would leave the servers of L4D. The new mode Scavange isn't bad though. It's like a new versus mode where humans gather gas and infected have to beat the **** out of them before they deliver it to the gastank.

Ahh that does ring a bell now....finding the program files in the steam folder
I went to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2 demo and fired up the .exe for it, but I get a "no permissions to run left4dead2" error.

Are you running steam at the same time?

EDIT: Nevermind, it's a timed demo based on how much you've played it. So delete that sucker or wait till this weekend...should be a free weekend to play the full game if you are still interested.
