I finally updated my OS to windows 7 ultimate 64-bit, i have an asus p5b motherboard. I just got 4 gigs of ram from my friend, they are all installed correctly, when i right click on computer and go to properties it says. Installed memory (RAM): 4.00 GB (2.94 GB usable)
Any ideas why all four arent useable?

start->run->msinfo32
as mentioned, verify its x64, also check what it says under Installed, Total and Available physical memory. it sounds like its seeing 4GB and you have 2.9GB available (in running win7 pro, and under system properties where you were looking before, mine just says 4GB, no reference to useable) which is normal since there would be in your cazse 1.1GB occupied by programs/services.
*edit* occurred to me you may not have Run set to appear in the start menu. msinfo32 can also be run from command prompt under all programs->accessories

yeah, no reason you shouldnt be getting all 4 gigs.
check your BIOS and enable memory remapping. a quick search says it should be in the BIOS under Advanced>Chipset->Northbridge Chipset Configuration. if its not there, i would (as mnosteele recommended) update your BIOS.. which wouldnt hurt to do anyways if its out of date.

looks like youre all set if im not mistaken. youre Installed memory is still 4GB, but now your total physical memory has gone from 2.94 (before) up to 4GB, as it should be.
the Available physical memory is right. its whats left over after whatever apps/services you currently have running.
and, if youre not familiar or comfortable with BIOS flashing, i can only refer you to your user manual (im not familiar with that board). as long as youve got the memory thing fixed its not imperative you do it now. still would be a good idea, depending on the update history (should be able to see whats been changed with the BIOS revisions at the mfgr's site).

no worries. thats how we roll out hereFuzzyDnkn wrote:I will look into updating, thank you for all the help
only thing i would offer would be to not interrupt the flash process, and make sure youre updating with the right firmware. aside from that its kinda easy and anticlimactic.
