Questions on modems

Post by westy »

I just picked up a new laptop to replace my old Dell Inspirion 1100 and lo & behold it doesn't have a modem! Yup, the old 56K deal. Up at the cabin, a phone line is all I have.

I'm looking at either a PCMCIA or a USB Mini External Modem.

Anyone have any recommendations on which is more reliable?

I'd appreciate any help you could offer!

were this 10 years ago i would have scorned the idea of using a USB device if there were any alternative, nowadays not so much. USB has matured fairly nicely and the gripes i had then arent much of an issue now.

however, as a direct answer to your question, i vote PCMCIA unless you will be forced to juggle between other cards you use. if thats the case then USB would get the job done for when youre at the cabin.

Yeah years ago I used to use "combo" modem/NICs in a PCMCIA card. If you can't find any, I may have one I can sell ya cheap..if yer in the States.
