Aerosmith Says Steven Tyler Has Quit

The sweet emotions that the members of Aerosmith once felt towards each other have apparently come to an end. In an interview with The Las Vegas Sun, the group’s lead guitarist, Joe Perry, said that the singer Steven Tyler quit after a concert in Abu Dhabi. “Steven quit as far as I can tell,” Mr. Perry told The Sun. “I don’t know anymore than you do about it.”

Mr. Perry was responding to remarks that Mr. Tyler made in an interview with Classic Rock, a British music magazine, in which Mr. Tyler said that he was preparing to focus on a solo career. “I don’t know what I’m doing yet,” Mr. Tyler said, “but it’s definitely going to be something Steven Tyler: working on the brand of myself - Brand Tyler.”

Mr. Perry said he had had difficulty confirming this with Mr. Tyler because the singer doesn’t return his phone calls. “He’s notorious for that,” Mr. Perry told The Sun. “That’s one thing I’ve learned to live with. I try to overlook it.”

Aerosmith canceled several concerts over the summer amid an injury-plagued season after Mr. Tyler fell from a stage on Aug. 5. A publicist for the band did not immediately return a request for comment.

that band has been plagued with trouble for a long time.

I kinda grew up listening to their music,was big for us in the 70's,still like them a lot too ! tyler has a perfect voice for rock imo .

They did make a nice comeback in the 87. They are the #1 selling American Rock Band.

On a side note, I think the band Boston could have reached Aerosmith type numbers if they would have stayed together.

They will get back together. No way is this the end of Tyler and Perry in Aerosmith. Those two don't know much else.

Agreed....I really got into Boston, saw one of their concerts.
I gotta admit Aerosmith never really caught on with me.

Seen them live before and I do have a few of their cd's, but honestly I'm not huge on them. They have my respect, but they have long since stopped being relevant to me.

I knew he wouldn't leave... I believe there was 3 other rumors of this before in the last 10 years so I never believed it for a second.

that's good news.. I like the band a lot. I've met the Bass player Tom Hamilton a few times... a really nice, down to earth guy.

I've seen them a few times on tour and they were pretty good, imo, but I haven't listened to one of their albums in years.

I cooked a dinner for one of their charter flights. As I was coming out of the plane they were boarding, they actually stepped down the ladder to let me off. They all told me thanks, and seemed real low keyed. I got a phone call 2 days later from the traveling manager assistant saying how much they enjoyed the meal....was not expecting that.

Joe Perry: ‘Things are still up in the air’

Joe Perry still isn't sure which way Steven Tyler's walking.

After reports swirled that Tyler might be leaving Aerosmith, his unexpected performance with bandmate Perry in New York City on Tuesday night wasn't just a shock to fans but also to Perry. At the performance, Tyler said, "I just want New York to know I'm not leaving Aerosmith."

"I was totally surprised. I had no idea he was going to show up," Perry tells PEOPLE in his first interview since the show. In fact, the pair hadn't spoken in weeks. "All I know is we walked off stage and were sitting taking our break [before] the encore and there was a bunch of commotion and I looked up and Steven was there."

Tyler asked what songs they had left to play, and Perry — who just released a solo album, "Have Guitar, Will Travel" and was kicking off a tour with his own band, the Joe Perry Project — invited the singer to join him on the Aerosmith classic "Walk This Way."

"I thought I'd be a nice guy and let him sit in," Perry explains. "After 40 years I can say, 'If you want to join in with my band, so much the merrier.'"

After he performed the song, Tyler (who has been recovering from injuries sustained when he fell off the stage over the summer) left without seeing or speaking to Perry again. "He appeared so fast and was gone so fast," says the guitarist, noting that physically, Tyler "seemed fine. He stood up there and sang and that was it."

So what does all of this mean for the future of Aerosmith?

"Nothing has really changed between two days ago and today," says Perry, who believes that Tyler's intention to take two years off from the band still stands.

But speaking for himself and bandmates Joey Kramer, Brad Whitford, and Tom Hamilton, he adds, "We're still Aerosmith. We don't know what we're gonna do. We've talked about all kinds of different things. Things are still up in the air."

As for whether they will find someone to temporarily replace Tyler, he says, "I can't say right now. We're just getting used to the idea that he's not going to be available for two years. Anything's possible."

I was never really a big fan...There were a few songs I dug along the way but I don't consider myself a fan of the band.
