vista optimization

Post by skitt »

So as a reference, i've used 2 things. A seperate Laptop without any optimization, and Megaupload.com
I formatted my PC recently and im experiencing EXTREMELY horrible speeds.

I used the auto optimizer for vista before i formatted, got a nice speed increase. i had about 5 times better Download speed of the seperate PC(running XP), and on megaupload i had about 1-2 MB/s when downloading.

Now after the format, i used the auto optimizer again, and im getting 1/2 of what the seperate PC has, and im getting about 150 KB/s download speed from megaupload.

If i remember correctly, on speedtest, i was getting around 18,000 Kb/s and now its at 1200 Kb/s.

Recommended RWINs: 64240, 128480, 256960, 513920, 1027840

Timestamps: OFF
SACKs: ON

Edit: My download speed is not jumping around a bit, and going higher then the other computers DL speed. This is quite odd, as i haven't done anything except restart my comp a few times for installing more drivers on my recently formatted computer.

But, my megaupload download speed is still 100-400 KB/s. not the 1-2 MB/s it used to be.

reinstalled drivers for my wireless card, ran some more tests, its even lower now.

« SpeedGuide.net TCP Analyzer Results »
Tested on: 06.19.2009 19:32
IP address: 98.244.xxx.xx
Client OS: Windows Vista

TCP options string: 020405b40103030201010402
MSS: 1460
MTU: 1500
TCP Window: 65700 (multiple of MSS)
RWIN Scaling: 2 bits (2^2=4)
Unscaled RWIN : 16425
Recommended RWINs: 64240, 128480, 256960, 513920, 1027840
BDP limit (200ms): 2628kbps (329KBytes/s)
BDP limit (500ms): 1051kbps (131KBytes/s)
MTU Discovery: ON
TTL: 48
Timestamps: OFF
SACKs: ON
IP ToS: 00000000 (0)

It also says this in the analyzer:

Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 65700
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits (scale factor: 2^2=4)
Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 16425

In Windows Vista, unless "TCP/IP Auto-Tuning" is disabled, only the Current TCP Window is displayed. Use the SG Vista TCP/IP patch instead of the TCP Optimizer for automatic tweaking.
RWIN is not fully optimized (even though it is a comparatively large number). The unscaled RWIN value is lower than it should be. Also, RWIN being close to and above 65535 does not justify the header overhead of enabling TCP 1323 Options. You might want to use one of the recommended RWIN values below.

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
64240 (up to 2 Mbit lines, depending on latency. MSS * 44)
128480 (1-5 Mbit lines, depending on latency. MSS * 44 * 2)
256960 (2-14 Mbit lines, depending on latency. MSS * 44 * 2^2)
513920 (8-30 Mbit lines, depending on latency. MSS * 44 * 2^3)
1027840 (25-60 Mbit lines depending on latency. MSS * 44 * 2^4)

C:\Program Files (x86)\DNA\btdna.exe
btdna.exe uses excessive system and memory resources with no corresponding benefit. Applications such as these should be disabled to improve overall system performance.
O1 - Hosts: ::1 localhost
Use HijackThis to fix this !

Some other things to consider: i just uploaded something to megaupload, I GOT 400 KB/s. And my download is still only getting up to 100 KB/s. its mostly 25-50 KB/s on most downloads.

I'm getting at the most, 1/10 of what i pay for. :/

Heres another Tracert

When ping times to a router in hop 1 shows 1ms, that is a wireless router. A cable connected router has ping times of <1ms.

Irregular ping times at hop 3. Problem may be in the line or cable modem (Comcast).

First power off the modem and place it on the floor under the comp table, away from ALL other electrical devices.

ok, i'll try completely powering down the modem, but what i don't understand, is that the computer that is directly connected to the router downloads a semi good speeds that i used to get closed to, (but not as good as im on wireless), and the other computer in my house gets better speeds, which is a laptop(wireless).
