Down for the count for now

Post by rickoic »

Afraid about noon today my computers went down. Had a short in my actic which knocked my electric off to them. Called a electriction and while waiting for him to get there went to sleep.

About 5 PM my wife got in from work and everything was smoky, so did some checking and my computer room and actic was completly filled with foul smelling smoke.

Called the FD and they came and tore the ceiling out of my computer room and sprayed foam or water into the actic. Couldn't get into the room because of the smell and smoke tonight, so will have to do it over the weekend.

Everyone alright is the main thing though, even my cat, although confused about everything.

Will keep you informed.

Tks

holy crap Rick, i do not push my systems to that extremes.

hoping your house did not burn down, there is no way i would overload my homes grid for a few more points, think about the goal of F@H, it s not to extend one's E-penis, but to help humanity.

i know you are really dedicated to the cause, but please check your load to the "home grid"

Actually think it was the a/c that began the problem. It's only 4 years old so will have to look long and hard on the warrenty.

As to load, my elec bill was actually coming down and not up.

And as to being a dedicated folder, yes I am.

In 2005 I had a radical prostate operation because of cancer. Now the average length of remaining life of men who had this type of cancer is 10 years. So far I'm very lucky that all my semi annual tests have come back positive. My PSA count is undetectable. So no it's not about the numbers, its about therapy. When I first got the diagnoses I felt helpless and very insecure, but then I began to look closer at the Folding program and realized that maybe, just maybe I could make a difference for the men and women that come after me. That's why my numbers are climbing, because I feel that the more I can do the more positive my outlook.

And if I only have 5 more years, I'm going to make them count towards finding a cure. Maybe not for prostate cancer, but other cancers and things. Yes it makes me feel good that my numbers are up there because it just means that I'm doing more for the cause.

I also have another appointment on the 10th of June to have another bit of possible skin cancer removed.

Sorry if I've come down on you about this, but as you can imagine right now I'm in a very vernable position, and I'm sure you didn't mean to sound facious.
There are other problems that also go along with prostate cancer that aren't appropriate subjects for the forum and right now they are weighing very heavy on my mind which is making me feel very fragile.

But anyway, no one was hurt, luckily I decided to go to sleep in the house and not as I sometimes do in my recliner which was right under to point of the problem. It's got about 50 lbs of insulation and ceiling on top of it right now. Smoke damage is probably going to be the worst problem. All our clothes smell of smoke, and I have thousands of dollars worth of sports stuff that more than likely took damage. But the most important thing is that my wife and I are alright and will be moving back into our house in the next couple of days.

Insurance Company has already contacted a contractor to get the smell out and they will start later today. After that will be mainly cleaning up and getting the room rewired and repaired.

Things are looking up, I bought some lottery tickets on my way to work and doubled my money, so all things aren't bad.

Well I managed to get some pics of what happened Saturday. Now I'm no expert, he will be out to look at it Monday, but it appears that about 4 years ago when I had central air installed they had to install a light in my actic in order to meet specs. The way they did it looks like they tapped into one of my existing lines and installed a regular household outlet and plugged the light into it. For some reason it began shorting out and when I tried to reset the fuse it sparked and set it to smoldering.

If the inspector agrees with that assesment then the air conditioning company will be liable for not only all the damage, but my deductable as well. A rep from a restoring company that the insurance company sent out said that the usual practice is for them to scrap all electronics effected by smoke damage and just replace it.

That would mean all the motherboards, graphics cards, power supplies, UPS's, everything would be replaced. Hopefully my computer desk as well as it was beginning to fall apart anyway. I'm sure that when they try to take it apart that it will fall apart in some areas when they do it.

Now I've been looking at a new rig that only cost's  $16,000 dollars.
FoxComm Destroyer nForce 780a motherboard.
4 x Tesla C1060 graphics cards.
AMD Phenom 9850 2.5GHz Quad (or better)
16GB 4x4GB G.Skin ram
Coolmax CUQ-1350B power supply
4 x 500GB Seagate Barracude HD's
Zalman 9500A cooling fan.

But, as with any dream, it'll probably be much less.

Anyway the replacement sounds nice if that's what happens.

Fold on.

Mis-titled thread! You are not down for the count...just resting between rounds!

I am so very sorry to hear of your plight Rick...having survived a house fire personally, I can so emphathize with you. This is only a temporary set back for you...though very sad and I am sure quite frustrating as well.

With your spirit...I believe you will kick whatever physical ailments are plaguing you at the moment as well. You WILL be back! You have the heart and spirit for both...and as long as you have those...you have the best medicine in the world! We cancer survivors are tough!!

Angel Blessings...please keep us informed. You are still my inspiration :)

Thank you.

Yes, I'll be back. Fire Inspector for my insurance company came out and found that the fire, actually smoldering burn, which actually never got to the flame stage, started in mid stream of the wiring. What actually caused it to start there may never be known. Possibilities are lightning strike weakening the wiring right there, rubbing against something, and near overload.

Or a combination of all three.

Any way I finally got my dsl moved to my wife's computer so we now have internet again. I was having to do everything from the computer at my work.

Now I can also contact my insurance company and get started writing down everything electronic that they will have to replace.

52" plasma tv
300 DVD jukebox
home sound system
Win NT server with 10 client license
and tons of computer stuff

Well finally got permission to start pulling things out of the room yesterday. Snuck a motherboard, 4 graphics cards and other accessories out of the room and got them fired up in my house, so should be folding at 20,000-21,000 per day for a while.

Foolish claims guy only gave me 4 sheets to list replacement stuff on, got them filled out and not even half done, so he's sending me 10 more.

Cleaning company should be calling me to set up time for them to start pulling things out to clean and deordize, and find other stuff that needs replaced, any time now.

Went with insurance co contractor for repairs as will be quicker and all I'll have to do is sit back and watch.

When all is said and done, I'm going to be folding on 4 motherboards, with 4 250 graphics cards each, plus some smp folding as well, so output should get up to around 90,000 per day after words.

So points wise I should come out a little ahead.

Well folding drops down close to zero again as the people were finishing up wrapping all my stuff and needed the one motherboard I had out to pack it up. So now just wait on the adjuster to go over my inventory and see about replacing what they allow.
