Boot from CD ROM failure Help!!

Post by CableDude »

Just restarted that POS that I own and got a blue screen similar to what Gixxer got in his thread.

I have another drive that I will install the OS on. However, I get a failure when I try to boot from a CD.

I think the jumpers are wrong on the HD and the CD rom. What is the right config here?

The HD is a Western Digital that is set to CS at the moment. The CD rom is set to Master. Both are on the same connector

Try setting both drives to cable select or master/slave.

Some motherboards don't like Cable Select. I'd set the HDD as Master and move the CD to a separate IDE channel if that's an option. If not, set the CD to Slave.

also CS only works if your using the ultra 80 wire cable or whatever its called. the ide ribbon with the 80 smaller wires ver the thicker 40 wire kind.
i would stick with the HDD at the end of the ribbon and and cd rom in the middle with HDD set to master and cd rom set to slave. Ideal setup. HDD as master on IDE channel 1 and cd-rom as master on IDE channel 2 (primary secondary i guess)

Yeah...I never leave CS to figure it out...many times taking control and telling it what you want is best.

Drive..Master.
CD on 2nd IDE controller if possible...to Master. If having to share same IDE controller/ribbon cable with HD...slave the CD. :thumb:

Reset BIOS to defaults, reseat everything.

HD is set to Master. CD ROM is set to slave. Still getting boot failure on if I need to boot off a CD. I don't think the drive is bad because I used this drive to install Windows the other day.

Other PC has same jumper settings on both CD drive and hard drive as the problem PC.

Must be something in the bios on problem PC.

Tried to make the CDROM be the secondary master. Separate IDE cable set to secondary master in the bios.

Set CD ROM jumper to Master. Boot failure still ensues.

I give up.

Sure. I have tried several... UBCD, Knoppix 5.1, Knoppix 3.7, Windows 98 & 2000 cd's & 3 different CD drives.

I think something is wrong with the bios and IDE connectors on the board.

I have checked the jumpers on the HD and CD drive many times, used two different IDE cables...Nothing.

The only other thing I'm not sure of is this ever worked after switching from a 400 mhz processor to a 600 mhz processor. I may swap those out to see what happens.

I was bored & wanted to try a few Linux Live CD's today. :p

This originally started when this PC was my main PC. It no longer is. :)
