Linksys WRT54GL and Tomato firmware newbie friendly?

Post by KoRnGtL15 »

I hear so much about this combo and how great it is. I am a complete wireless noob and know nothing about it. I need to free up a couple ethernet cables both at 50ft long. I would be taking our Acer netbook and Nintendo Wii online with the wireless. I have always used a wired connection and cable internet. How hard would this be to set it up? Tips or suggestions would be great. On a side note. I heard this router http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833320023 is cheaper and better then the Linksys WRT54GL. Any truth to that?

Tomato or DD-WRT firmware can give better stability than stock firmware, as well as added features. Flashing is usually not difficult..treat it like upgrading your normal stock firmware in many cases. Some routers/APs require special steps, those directions are usually found at the firmware manufacturers site.

A lot of people prefer the Asus routers over the Linkies...sometimes more RAM...not sure on this specific model.

What Asus model would you suggest over the Linksys? I currently have no use for wireless N and looking for a G router.
