Internet Dropping Randomly for 5 minutes

Post by Orius »

Since sunday (2.22.2009), my internet connection has been dropping randomly about every 30 to 45 minutes for about 5 minutes at a time.

At no point does my modem have ANY flashing green lights during the dropped connection. Power cycling the modem sometimes will fix this, but others times I just have to wait out the 5 - 10 minutes and it will connect fine.

I tried some low level troubleshooting of this problem. Tried running my connection directly from the modem. Still getting same kind of drops with no lights flashing and power cycling does not always remedy the problem.

Hardware:
Modem: Motorola Surfboard SB5101
Router: Linksys 150N w/ DD-WRT v24 SP1 Standard-Generic Firmware.
XP SP3 Fully updated (no problems for ~8 months or since I got the service).

SNR: During connection & drop ranges 39.1 - 40.1.
Power Lvl: During connection & drop ranges from 2.1 - 2.5

Logs: Lots of messages here. All of the dates say 1970-01-01 and I have no idea what that means. None of the messages show a date other than 1970-01-01.

Messages include:
1) SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing
2) SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire FEC framing
3) ToD request sent- No Response received
4) No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out

And 2 other messages that are only listed a few times each:
5) Init RANGING Critical Ranging Request Retries exhausted
6) DHCP FAILED - Request sent, No response
7) Started Unicast Maintenance Ranging - No Response received - T3 time-out
8) Received Response to Broadcast Maintenance Request, But no Unicast Maintenance opportunities received - T4 time-out

Those last 2 seem bad, but I don't really know what any of these mean.

Help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Have you tried replacing the network cable to the modem and router it's rare they do can go bad.

Logs: Lots of messages here. All of the dates say 1970-01-01 and I have no idea what that means. None of the messages show a date other than 1970-01-01. that is odd with the dates either your router has a date time function that needs to be reset ,or something is broadcasting to the modem the wrong date and time...

I would call the provider the reason being is Started Unicast Maintenance Ranging - No Response received - T3 time-out
8) Received Response to Broadcast Maintenance Request, But no Unicast Maintenance opportunities received - T4 time-out

It sounds like modem , is trying tell you ,orthe provider to fix something and when broadcast gets sent no one is there to pick it up..

Check the modem and rotuer for date time functions first try setting them to the current date and time...
