bottom line - defeat congestion??

Post by esapp3 »

i run on speedtest in the range of 12XX dload on a 1.5mb "advertised" line.

my ISP is dnet.net, proxy off of verizon.......

when i do a speedtest for most of the day, late afternoon and evening i will get dloads down in the 400 - 800 K range........

??dloads of 12XX acceptable?? on a 1.5Mb line??

even with tweaks, not going to experience noticeable improvements??
[MTU = 1500]

have to think the drop in speed is due to congestion???

ran tracert...latency is higher downstream, but what can i do to correct??

bottom line....thats life, move on???!!!!

with dsl you most likely will get 80 percent since dsl has more overhead then cable partly due to encryption and other factors like distance. About the drops that is kinda odd though odd though. Does the slow downs happen when more calls get into the house ,or do you hear any clicks or noises on the line?

Post a few tracerts maybe i could help determine where the promblem lies.

pretty much the same that i experience when i run a test period over a day..

will run in the 12XX from morning until about 1530 then drop in the mud some where in the 400 to 800 kb until late night...........

thanks for your input........i believe that it is mentioned that the biggest improvement change is the MTU value = 1500...done that!!

I would give them a call and inquire about that hop4 that's a huge spike which tells me it's on there end ,so many they are having some promblems. YOu also have some erratic spikes at hop 6and 7

been to my ISP, Dnet prior to posting. they in turn worked with verizon. knocked me down for 2 days while the 'engineers' made attempts to resolve and also to play the
'blame game'............

then they tried to throw it back to me - like it could be my inside wiring???

what i was going to try is to breakdown the traces and define who is who and where the contants reside before passing it off to the network map........at that point i guess we are all at their mercy????

if you or anyone else has suggestions, i'll try them

If you line is old re wirring might not be a bad idea it should help somewhat since the spikes seem to happen past hop3 it looks like either trouble in routing ,or some equipment on the isps ,or another companies end..

http://www.broadbandnuts.com/index.php?page=13 here is a guide on how to re wire if you know a tech ,or done it before to look at..

thanks for the feedback - wiring could tweak it a bit i agree..however when i look at the effort to drop a dedicated cat5 to the NID in a 3 story house and when i see the drops during 'busy' time - the quality of the inside wire [i don't think] changes ???

thinking of searching out, if any, a place to register my complaint - not sure who outside of the ISP???

You do have point though since the spikes are happening past hop3 it might not do that much as far as the rewirring.

With the isp try recording a few tracerts to log a file during peak and if the fhe first teir gets you now where ask for an eginner or tier 2 or 3 every place does it differnetly. If you keep recording the routes during peak it might give them a bettter idea what is going on ,and how to fix it.

As for the other company just deal with the provider mainly though keep on them if you have to. I had a buddy that lived near me with a simmilar promblem where the speed and most of the time the connection will just drop out ,and he couldn't connect back no matter what after 8pm everyday ,so he just kept calling and calling till he got someone who fixed it.
