Thoughts?

Post by CableDude »

I have a 2.4 ghz machine with 256 Memory that I need to put Office 2007 on.

Problem is the PC has 2000 on it. I would need to put XP on it in order to run 2007.

Will the PC run half way decent with XP and 256 for memory?

I would hate using that PC for sure. lol

It'll run, decent but pretty slow loading up office or any big project.

Stick another 256 stick in and you will be fine if it is possible to put another in.

256 meets minimum requirements.
Experience shows us that minimum requirements doesn't always equate tolerable performance. Bumping to 512 or higher would certainly help...and quite inexpensive.

yeah I agree here... I just worked on a system with similar CPU and 256 of ram and to be honest XP ran pretty decent and so did apps. As long as you can get drivers for it I say go for it!

Well, it was nice to actually be able to do something. I have an identical PC so I took the memory out and bumped the memory up to 512.

2000 started up really nice. Will format and put XP on soon..... I hope.

My grandparents have a pc that was given to them with Windows XP Media Center on it and it uses a Pentium 3 and can only support up to 384 ram which is installed in it atm. It's very gross, so slow and just with AntiVir loading it takes about 4 minutes to load everything to begin to open even IE or FF. Can't even imagine the time needed to open Word 2003, let alone 2007.

They should use the recommended requirement as the minimum requirement and up the recommended for any Windows, since 256 for XP is just pathetic cause you cant even get things to open without waiting for a min or 2. I'm going to have to get them a better pc for Christmas cause it's just so disappointing to see the struggle of the computer and alot of older people just get annoyed having to wait for stuff to load and they just wind up turning it off.

XP now installed. It runs really nice. Starts up way faster then when 2000 was installed. Office 2007 works nice as well.

Nice to finally be able to accomplish something I start and not be interrupted by Image

Seems to be really slow to login now that a network drive is being mapped to it.

There a few things you can do to make it faster:

1.) Increase the page file memory size from 512mb to 1024mb and then after a reset, do a defrag.

2.) Remove any unncessary stuff from the start through MSconfig (use the run command to access it).

BTW wanted to ask, did you install anything else? Win XP SP2 or SP3? And did it only slow down after you mapped a network drive?

It's on SP3. It seems to have slowed down after mapping a network drive.

It seemed way faster to get into windows after logging in before I did the whole mapping a network drive.

This may also be a factor:

Check those out and see if it helps,

I was thinking of this thread today....
I sat down at a Dell Optiplex with some quirky Outlook 2007 issues with the calendar in monthly view.

I fairly quickly thought to myself how slow it was in opening up apps, especially Outlook. So I went to system properties. P3 866. 256 megs.

Quickly went out to Jeep to get memory to crank it up a few notches. Sheeesh!

And I was worried about a 2.4 GHz machine.

You can run it but I would hack the crap out of the install to make it run as quickly as possible (no themes and stuff, you know, the usual stuff, edit the services)
