Do they use the same engine and hardware? Do they offer the same performance?

Same exact performance, just different SW options and the Platinum comes with the drive for the front of your PC, but other than that, they're the same exact thing.

I heard that philips makes a sound card that is better than even the great sb live! It supports eax and a3d(i think?).

Yes, the New Philips Acoustic Edge 5.1 Card has gotten rave reviews and even beats SB Live on some benchmarks. If I were to get a new soundcard, it would definitely be that one.
