Finding out where AD-HOC connections are coming from

Post by Mojovonio »

Hello all,

I've used this forum to troubleshoot many things that come across me during the day, but i cannot find an answer to this problem.

In my office, I'm seeing my 2 secured wireless connections, as well as a host of other AD-HOC connections, with names like Internet Oasis, Lobby, Guest Access, etc.

So I'll break it down in to bullets

-Some of their signals are quite strong, 4 bars at times.
-I only authorized the 2 wireless connections we have. If someone is allowing an ad-hoc connection, I need to find out who.
-I read that internet oasis is what some places call their hotspots, but our office is surrounded by other offices, no retail establishments like a starbucks or anything.

So I connected to a few, tried to find a gateway address or something, but it doesn't give me one, and I don't have access the the internet while connected.

Its a bit of a concern for me, as users will just leave their wireless on and have it connect to these connections without knowing.

Thanks,

I'm not very well versed in this field, but I think your best bet would be a tool like this. AirDefense Mobile

If that's not what your looking for then there are a lot of similiar tools listed here.

I would need more information about what network operating system you use, before I could offer suggestions on how to ensure that your users only connect to the access points you've authorized.
