VooDoo 3 (2 questions)

Post by jesse23 »

Right now I have the VooDoo 3 3000 with the stock cooling fins on it. I want to put a spare 486 fan on it. Ok, 1st off how do I get the cooling fins off? Then after that how do I get the 486 fan on it? It only has the clips to go arround the 486. TIA

Well with my V2 2k, I just screwed the 486 fan right on. I think you caould use a pentium fan on the 3000.

I've heard of some ppl using elastic bands to attach it, but I don't know how effective that would be. when I have more time (It's thanksgiving here for me) I'll take a look for ya.

A tiny bit of crazy glue is holding a huge fan on my V3 3500 HS which is the same as the 3000 HS. Its on there real good.

i did the same with the Voodoo3 3000 in my older machine. at that point, i did just use plastic zip ties to hold it in place (not very pro looking, but it worked). in my new machine, which has a Matrox g400 MAX, i took off the stock heatsink, and put on a small h/s & fan (i think they were from a 486. i grabbed it out of the "junk" bin at my local used computer parts store for $1). in this case, i just used thermal tape to affix it to the GPU. that holds it on just fine, though i usually wanna be careful to not yank the power lead too hard when rooting around inside the enclosure, since there are no screws holding it in place.

Putting a 486 fan isn't as good as just putting an 80mm fan over the fins now. Also if you plan to remove the stock cooling, you should lap the chip cuz the VD3 chip is REALLY REALLY uneven. I lapped mine, and put a Celeron OEM heatsink on it, then another Celeron Heatsink on the other side (Have you ever touched the other side of the chip? Its hot enuff to fry eggs) After that i stuck a 92mm fan perpendicular to the board, or what would be kool are 2 fans, 1 for each heatsink :)

I wouldnt take it off but... if you still want to then all you have to do is look at the back of the card where the heatsink is. There are 2 small clips holding it in place. You have to use a pair of pliers and squeeze the clip and push it so it can slide back through and pull out the other side of the card.
Just have a look at it its not hard to figure out. Its easier than explaining it.

I just dont think it makes a diff if you change the HS. I did all that with mine, took it off, lapped the heatsink and chip added some good compound and it still didnt get higher than it was oc'd to b4(202Mhz). I got those stupid white artifacts on the screen in games b4 and after at those speeds. The HS does a pretty good job as it is. The limitting factor for V3 is the memory not heat. Although I still think its a good idea to put a fan on the HS.
Do you have yours overclocked? What can you get to?
Like is said b4 my 3500 is running at 202Mhz where 183Mhz is the default.

Oh btw, any fan is better than none but I have a nice big P3 fan on mine. ITS HUGE....

Anyways good luck with it :)

Well now its at 176 from 166. I had it at 190 and it was fine, but was rather hot. So in yer opinion whats better to do? Remove the stock cooling fins and put on the 486 fan, or just put the 486 fan ontop of the fins?
