After the troubling suicide commited by a Missouri teenager due to an Internet related incident, state lawmakers voted and gave final approval yesterday to a bill which will deal with cyber-harassment.
The bill is expected to cover several aspects of the new wave of technology, identifying as illegal the harassment from computers, text messages and many other electronic devices, besides the well known written and telephone communications.
...
Lori Drew was accused of creating a fake MySpace identity under the name of “Josh Evans”, a 16 year old boy, making friends and later harassing Megan not long before she committed suicide.
On October 15, 2006, the so-called 16 year-old teenager Josh Evans turned against Megan, sending her negative comments, and ending with a harsh message: “The world would be a better place without you.” According to a police report, Megan later hanged herself in her bedroom closet.
Another reason why Myspace and any other social site fails and should be taken down... just think..if myspace didn't exist then this would have never happened. Rather hard to make yourself look like a young boy being an older woman like that in person.

How about the parents should be monitoring their children's online activities!!

Thats always a givin..but how many times do you remember as a kid that you were out of your parents site or wanted to keep something hidden that you were doing...
Either they need to require you to have a ID to make a account and have stricter communication protocals or shut the sucker down completely.

"If Virginia Tech didn't exist then the VT shootings never would have happened."
This statement uses precisely the same logic in an identical situation. Wherein a deranged person causes a problem at or through a non-responsible organization.

Naw not going to get involved in a stupid reference like that... think what ya like and bait all you wish or hell just leave me another ignorant negative reputation point since you enjoy it so much.

I understand what you are saying and yes, I do agree that they should require something of an ID in order to register with the site. It would eliminate a lot of kids getting themselves in hot water.
I am not sure that is going to happen. They take stronger measures against impersonators. I had 4 accounts deleted so far. They were Nigerians pretending to be good ole American boys!
anyways.... these social networks need to be controlled better... you should have to put in a ID or something to prove your age and to be better tracking the person that posts comments or gives responses. Far to many people I know have split friendships cause of "Myspace Drama" this all revolves around the site itself IMO... Sure people are to blame too but you have to nail the source of continual issues not just one issue or one issue that has happened such as this.
I guess you could say I hate myspace....yep sure do!

Simply pointing out that, while I absolutely detest mySpace, they cannot and should not be held responsible for such actions of people. They are ultimately providing a service on the net and some people will unfortunately misuse that service. While I personally dislike it and wish many less people would use it, it's not doing anything illegal in this case.

I don't agree 100% with that... There are a lot of sick adults out there prowling around the internet... on myspace..ya.. sure,
and also on other sites.. chat rooms / IM's / ECT..
It's the parents that need to watch there kids.
Edit: I agree with your intentions trying to protect kids that are out there.. that I give you credit for that man..
You know.. it would be kind of a cool thing.. to have a intranet.. just for kids.. with no email or IM.. just pages for them, and some sort of password for their parents to log them in. I'm sure that would still be a target for hackers and other people.. but it might be a good idea, so they don't
stumble into trouble.. I know that there are paid sites there like that.. but I'm talking about a big and free intranet for kids... that would be cool.

a service that should have a tighter leash and measures in place to prove age/ownership and control of the accounts users make. Its not therefore it should be subject to the same laws as we give on anything we use...and that inturn goes right to the source which would be "Myspace". Once they correct how they monitor who uses their services correctly then fire it back up.

I agree..lots of sickos..and we should watch our kids but all too many times as I've said before we as kids took advantage of any time we had to get out of our parents sight to do things not allowed for many reasons. The sites need to have more control over who uses them with again, prove of age,ID of who they are and who is using the site with whatever measures needed.
If I knew that I would be selling the idea to them...but right now I don't beyond going to the same measures porn sites are made to do with CC# to show proof of age etc... perhaps when we get this new Federal ID that might help.

Proof of age, like a drivers license or state ID? Then hackers may possibly be able to access that information. Not a good idea.

I would not use my Federal ID to register for a site. It is like using your social security number. Not a good idea.

While it would be an absolutely wise thing for the owners to do, and would show their responsibility and dedication to member safety, it is in no way a law. Similar to how there is no law against me using a proxy to hide a second SpeedGuide account.
While I agree that myspace should do a better job at controlling their own site, there is no room for the government to step in against myspace in this case.

I agree..not in this case..but as a cure to the problem that might lead to more cases or even worse situations. However, I think the Feds are already involved in this case, but I'm sure this girl had more issues beyond this woman pretending to be a boy to cause her to commit suicide..I believe alot of facts are going to be left out of the news and not released.

Parental advisory software, thats the way to go IMO. Same with the TV programs, both I feel are very underused.
That was the point that I was trying to make earlier. Parents need to take responsibility for what their kids are doing online.

I've had my CC# stolen twice...hard to tell where and when since I use it everywhere...I monitor my credit and my accounts like everyone that is responsible should do. But it falls back on the source to secure their servers like Myspace that could use these measures to secure and help protect kids and adults on its site.

It never falls back on to just one thing for either situations, its a total of all factors.
Even the most secure site is not safe from attacks, and having sensitive info on a social networking site is just a bad idea, even if you made its security as strong as a bank's site.
Also for managing CC/Debit info, 1 card for in person purchases, 1 for online. Can help narrow down how your info was acquired.

Still, Myspace can do more to secure everything...I would love to see that site die.

vt and my space are two diff things, one was a poser and one was psycotic
So it's not really about the security at MySpace, it's about the "fact" that you don't like it.
I understand now. Thanks for clearing that up!
The "Fact" that I don't like Myspace doesn't mean I can't say its Myspace's duty to secure its site from people pretending to be a different age or sex like this situation..but thanks for trying to understand!

I used to go the speedlimit when my mom and dad drove with me when I was younger..when they weren't with me I'd smash that limit cause I could and they were not there...good try though.

It makes you very biased against it and not able to see the long term repercussions of some actions.

There isn't any way to secure it to anyone's satisfaction unless we do the same as China does and force all ISP's to block it.
