Network cards ????????

Post by RoundEye »

OK, from what I've read 3com is the best one.
Anybody have any other favorites?
I planning on setting up a Windows2000 server with a P3-800Mhz micro. I want to know what flavor 3comm card to use.
The works with processor
Chocolate with management
OR
Plain old vanilla
I'm using Linksys now in all my comps and I want a good card in my server.

I use a couple of the 905B cards in some workstations at work, and they have been good cards so far.

Which one you actually need depends on what kind of network, or more importantly, how large of a network, the server is going to be used on and exactly what is going to be available from the server. I.E. if the server is going to be a simple file/print server for a small (say 15 or less) workstations, plain vanilla will be plenty adequate. On the other hand if the server is going to host a server-side application, such as an Oracle app. with 20+ concurrent users, I'd definately want The Works to relieve the processor of some of it's workload.

From looking at the ads for the cards, I think I would spend the extra $23 and go for the works if money is not too much of a concern-if it is, then I think the 905B should work fine.

I have a small network in my house using a linux server. The 3c905b cards are in all of them and I have never had a problem with any of the systems.

Yeah I personally use a 3C905B TX with my home pc but if you want to save a few bucks you could use a Linksys or a Netgear card and get equally good performance.

The 3COM card with the processor on board is realy intended to be used in a high traffic server PC. Its not very practical for home use. But it would be cool to tell all your friends about. hehe
So if your server is gonna be real busy it might be worth it but if it isnt then save a few bucks and go ElCheapo with a Netgear or Linksys.

3com cards, especially recent ones (last 3yrs)to my experience have been very good quality. I live in the UK and I hate spending a lot of money so I go to the computer fairs here. Recently I have been able to buy a few really good quality 3com network cards for only £10 each some for less. I have tried others but I have to say that the less well known cards seem to have problems here and there. Realtek are doing some great cards too.

a popular 3com card seems to be (3com Etherlink 3c905cTX)with add on sockets for displays at the front of your case, I got mine for £12 here(second hand)
