Overclocking

Post by billyboysport »

Okay, I've been to some overclocking sites but how exactly do you overclock your motherboard and processor? Do you do it with software or have to do it by going through your hardware?

U can do it with ur hardware or software. For hardware, you do it on your motherboard, you have to set your jumpper settings. I assume that u know how to get the Mhz (FSB x mulitpler). You have to set the jumpers to the desire FSB and mulitpler. For some of the motherboard, like Abit AT7, it's jumper free, you can actually do it from your bios, just click click click and u r all set. Software is even easier, just change to the desire FSB and multipler and your are all set.
One of the software is called SoftFSB, or another good one is CPUCool. For the CPUCool, it's actually a motherboard monitoring program and it has a option to optimization your motherboard.
Just before you overclock it, make sur eu have enough cooLing. good luck overclocking

No, I'm a newbie at overclocking. So do I just download something like CPU Cool and use it to optimize my motherboard? How do I set the motherboard to overclock manually?

What motherboard model do you have? If it's fairly new (supports pIII/Athlon) You can OC in bios (usually accesed by pressing 'delete' during boot (while it's counting ram)). You should probably refer to the mobo manual for specifics in BIOS, but usually there's a bios section called 'smart setting' (IWILL boards) or something like that. If you can't find a section like that, you can just fing something similar, a section where you can adjust your Front Side Bus (FSB). Because newer chips are multiplier-locked, you have to adjust the FSB. (Multiplier X FSB = Speed). The default speed is 100 or 133, depending on your processor. Increment this number by the minimum amount allowed. Reboot your system and run it normally for a while. Does it run normally? then you can probably increment it another notch. If you notice problems while running (windows crashes..etc), then reduce your speed to where it worked. On the page where you adjust the FSB, there's usually a CPU temp guage. While you're adjusting, try not to let this number too high (mine runs at 105 f)

Good Luck... and if you need more detailed help let me know your mobo model.

Not nessessery, some of the new MoBo doesn't have the Bios settings to change....my Abit KT7 has the ability to do that. And i believe the Asus A7V has the dip switch so u can do it easily too

ok..sure, here's a quick explaination how to overclock.

You always see the "Mhz" from the spec is the speed. It's making up by FSB (Front side bus) and Muliplier. It's the FSB x multipler. Like my Thunderbird 1Ghz for example, it's running at 1000Mhz which is 100Mhz FSB) x 10 (multipler). By upping either one of them can give you a higher clock speed (Mhz), we called this overclocking. You can use software to adjust the FSB and the multipler to get higher. People recommand to up the FSB more than the mulipler. So some popular software are SoftFSB, CPUCool...your can also do it with the motherboard jumpers, BIOS for some board, but i don't think we should get into that. Just download one of those program and see how it works.
I m wondering what processor u have, and motherboard, so we can help u some more with it....if it's some old processor like PII 300 or something like that, the max you could probably do is 50Mhz more. I can onlt get 61Mhz more on my other AMD 500.
Hope this can help you a bit :)

First, tell us what mobo u have ssjx6buu, then, maybe we can be of more help. Also look in your mobo manual, it might have instructions.

yep, the manual might tell u how to do the jumpers setting then u can play around with it. But i recommand u to use the software first to get an idea how overclocking works first b4 messing with ur H/W

Overclocking is not something to be taken lightly. Yea, maybe if you set something wrong you will just crash and restart. Sometimes you will fry something. Be cautious when O/C'ing. You may wind up buying a new processor. Usually something that happens when you try to adjust the Core Voltage settings. Which you have to do sometimes to keep your processor running faster, and COOLER. The first generation of Durons were the best to overclock. I overclocked a Duron 600 to 1000 and it ran cool (well--108 F, which is about 14 deg. below the recommended Max temp) and stable.
But AMD has since fixed that little O/C stradegy.

Main thing is - BE CAREFUL!! We dont want you mad at us because you had to buy a new processor. Do some research, talk to people, and learn some cool sh*t.
