Athlon processor?

I am currently running: a PII 350 Mhz with 11 GB HD. I want to upgrade to the faster processor i can for cheap! I heard athlon is cheaper that pentium, but should i go with: celeron, athlon, or xeon?(i heard these were cheaper)
and which motherboard is best for athlon?

Actually what your asking is...about AMD processers.

Athlon
Thunderbird
or Duron.

The
Duron is the cheaper of the AMD family and the Thunderbird is the most expensive as far as across the same speed. As far as motherboards go, depends on what you want to do and how much your willing to spend. Same as for your processer.

First of all, celeron is from Intel, they are like the low end of Intel. Xeon is the high end, and they are NOT cheap.
Intel - from low to high
celeron
Pentium
Xeon

AMD - from low to high
Duron
Athlon
Thunderbird

Compare the AMDs to Intel, AMD is a lot cheaper in the first place, they are about two and a half time cheaper than the Intel depends. The performance of AMD is better than Intel too. I think that's all u need to know for now and i don't recommand u to upgrade your computer urself before u have more knowledge

That is the correct order. @homie, I recommend you go with a T-bird since it's currently the fastest processor and they sell really cheap right now, as for a motherboard I recommend an Asus A7V.

mmm, arent the "tbird" and "athlon" one in the same? the tbird is the socket version of the "classic athlon" or the slot-a athlons. so duron, athlon, tbird would be incorrect. if you were to do the same with intel chips it would be celeron, pentium slot1, pentium fcpga, xeon or some where along those lines. i dunno, not trying to be a smart ass or whatever.

Celerons and Durons are of the same class, but I would go with the Duron in that case. Athlons/Thunderbirds (whichever your motherboard supports) are cheaper and comparable to PIII's. Xeons are EXTREMELY expensive, but are very fast processors. Especially if you can get 2 of em

Depends how much money he's willing to spend, how much performance hhe's looking for. Or like some people, they don't like things other than Intel cuz they've been using it for their past 10 yrs.
But if i were u, i would go a T-bird 1Ghz with KT7A, as u can see, 1.1 and 1.2 are not in a very good price now. Only 100Mhz or 200Mhz more and they cost like $100+ difference. 1Ghz is just right.

T-Bird is an improved Athlon. Athlons are faster than PIII's in bare clock speed, Duron's are a lot faster than the crappy Celeron. Get an AMD. AMD processors have 3D-Now that allow for more effective calculations concerning graphics. Personally, go with a Duron as they have lag a bit behind the Athlons but cost a lot less. Xeons are usually for workstations and servers and people who need it design graphic intensive stuff.
