Can't get rid of MALWARE ALARM!!!

Post by Qui-Gon John »

Keep getting a popup I'm sure is Spyware for something called MALWARE ALARM. I have updated Spyware Blaster, Updated Immunized and Scanned with Spybot, Updated & Scanned with Ad-Aware 2007 and Updated and Scanned with Super AntiSpyware, also updated and virus scanned with AVG Anti-Virus. But this Spyware persists.

Any help to get rid of this would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!

John are you not following the suggestions around here? I know I have helped you a few times with malware and given you all the information you need to stay clean.

If you think your computer has been compromised by malware then please follow these instructions for proper cleanup.

1. Disable System Restore then reboot your pc, this will delete all old restore points.

2. Download and run CrapCleaner, this will clean out all of your temporary and junk files.

3. Do a free online virus scan from BitDefender and remove all that it finds.

4. Download, update and do a full system scan with SpyBot Search & Destroy 1.5.1 and remove all that it finds.

5. Download, update and do a full system scan with Ad-Aware 2007 and remove all that it finds.

6. Download, update and do a full system scan with SUPERAntiSpyware and remove all that it finds.

7. Download, update and do a full system scan with AVG Anti-Spyware and remove all that it finds.

8. Download and run AutoRuns and see if there is anything suspicious. You have to know what you are looking for but it is an invaluable tool, it is kind of like HijackThis on steriods.

9. Download, update and do a full system scan with Windows Defender and remove all that it finds.

10. Download the free 15-day trial of CounterSpy and do a full system scan, you can remove this after you use it if you like.

11. Download and do a scan with HijackThis 2.0.0 and post the results here in the forums so I can assist you.

12. Download and update SpywareBlaster to help stay malware free.

13. Use ZonedOut to help prevent future infections.

14. If you are not already using Kaspersky Anti-Virus, BitDefender Anti-Virus or NOD32 Anti-Virus then uninstall your current anti-virus program (Norton, McAfee, TrendMicro etc.) and install then update and scan with the free 30 day trial of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 or if you prefer to stick with a free antivirus program I would recommend AntiVir Personal Edition.

15. Do ALL of the latest Windows Updates to ensure your OS is patched properly.

Thanks, I saved that post as a Word Document and will attempt the steps I have not already done.

I have done and always do, steps 2, 4, 5, 6, 12, 15 and for step 14, I have been using AVG Free on my XP boxes and Anti-Vir on my Vista box. You really think I should move to Anti-Vir on my XP boxes.

Thanks again for your help.

AntiVir is far better than AVG.

 AVG has fallen down to just "middle of the pack" detection wise over the past few years.

Thanks guys. And I also recall you guys mentioning Avast Free, do you still think it better to use AntiVir Free over Avast Free?

IMO yes, I use AntiVir on my pcs and never had a problem with viruses. Friend uses AVG and still gets alot of stuff on his pc so he winds up formatting it every so often. Some people never learn :nope:

You could try BOClean http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html too for malware issues. I find it somewhat useful for some users.

mnosteele, your link for AVG Anti-Spyware doesn't seem to work. Is this supposed to be a free version, because all I can find on Grisoft's site is a pya version, with a trial offer. thanks

The link works fine, it's free forever as an on demand scanner.

Not as good as AntiVir and AntiVir is extremely light, you don't even know it's running.

Pettos, actually on my systems, I get the advert when Anti-Vir is updating, not when I boot up my computer.
