Activision produced a PC version of GH3 too, so it really only takes the $80 entry fee for the game + guitar to get into it.
The thing about something like Guitar Hero or Rock Band versus playing a real instrument simple enough; it's just a game. Learning to play the guitar can take years of practice, dedication, and requires slightly more expensive equipment. Guitar Hero doesn't require a heck of a lot more than a game, a plastic controller, and someone who still has a pulse.
I have some musical background with the bass and bass guitar, however, most of my friends do not have any experience with a stringed instrument. But with almost no practice, me and a buddy can quickly load up a game and enjoy it. Said friend may have no dedication to put towards learning how to actually play the guitar, but can still enjoy the game on its own.
While some may scoff at the game or even the concept, it has also lead a number of people to develop an interest in learning how to play the guitar or bass.

I picked up the pc version (80$) about a week ago. Its minimum reqs are high (2gb ram).
Its alot like parappa the rappa, a game of timing

I play a real gibson explorer thru a marshall amp and my wife said I looked like a retard holding the plastic guitar. However retarded I looked I did not care as the game was fun to play.
Its somewhat comical aswel with 70 plus songs and possibly many more for download, Would be a fun novelty game to pull out at parties.
Unlike playing a real guitar there is no real creative aspect/ The abilty to write your own tunes would be cool. Who knows what mods will become available for this game?. a pickup switch and a wah pedal would add some fun factor
On the plus side you do learn about song structure which you could use to apply to a real guitar
although I have yet to try the online play I give guitar hero 3 for pc a 4 outta 5.

I was going to post a link to that thread, but the SG search results for "bullsh|t" were too numerous
sometimes you have to think outside the box to get inside the box

Every normal man must be tempted at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.
I often wonder if the voices in my head ever get frustrated because I'm just too damn lazy to climb that clock tower.
