sblive problem

I recently formatted my system and had to

I had a similar problem with my new SBlive! it would play cd's but any wave files made a high pitched squeel. I moved it to another PCI slot and it was ok, this might be worth a try even though it worked ok before..

Do you have a microphone attached to your PC?
You might be getting a little feedback. Lower the mic. volume in volume controls.

yup I have a mic attached to the soundcard... its muted right now so it can't be that...

I thought it could've been the fact that in advanced options for the mic, 'mic boost' was checked but I unchecked that and still hear the squeaking

ok, I tried a different pci slot and still the problem is there....

Come to think of it, if it is the sound I think it is I've had that problem too. The prob I was having was that my speaker wire was not firmly seated in the port on the back of the sblive. Sorry to get your hopes up but thats what it really was. The only other thing I can think of is to eliminate the speakers as the poblem, use a pair of headphones to see what sound they give cause if you are hearing something than obviously your sound card is putting out a signal.

I think i have the answer!!!! (yeah, baby, yeah!)

actually, after reorganizing my computer desktop, i'm getting that sound too. that "humming" noise whenever you move the mouse or load a new screen.

i figured out what the problem was in my setup.

all you have to do is open your Volume Control Properties, and put a check in the MUTE box under CD Audio. that is what is causing the problem. after i checked that box, everything is fine.

it probably stems from the fact that the cd audio cable that comes from your cd-rom is near the video card, and that the magnetic resonance off your card during graphical applications (i.e. anything that windows does, including moving the mouse!) causes this auditory interference.

hope that solves your problem. it did for me!

no luck.... the squeaking is still there.

although, I do have ONE more thing I can try that I'm pretty sure will work.

When I formatted my hd, I changed the cd cable from analog to digital.

I'll go back to analog and see if it helps.

btw- what advantages am I losing when switching back to analog as opposed to digital?

dude, i seriously worked for me, under both my win98 and w2k dualboot configurations.

do you have a microphone plugged in? mute that and see if it works.

other than that, i can only share your frustration

....used to have a mic plugged in but ever since I started having these problems I d/c'ed it.

I also muted it in the mixer settings

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers from scratch?If so try moving the card to a pci as far away from the cpu and videocard as possible.It sounds like your getting some kind of electrical or magnetic interference from one or the other.Could be caused by the harddrive as well.Other than that you're card must be damaged in some way or more likely a setting in windows is not right.Goodluck.

I have a SbLive too, I did have that problem, the messup in the system I had you ask? well, it was sharing the IRQ with the Mouse and Video card, check that, cause some of the mouse input cammands where going to the sound card on mine and coming out the speakers.
here is the step by step walk through.

right clik on my computer
click on properties
click on Sound, Vidoe, and game controllers
click on Creative SB Live!
check the IRQ its using
check the IRQ of the mouse(if the same do the following)
click on Creative SB Live!
click remove
shut down the system
remove the SbLive!
restart
get the program RegClean from Microsoft
run that
remove the INF file for the SbLive!(name is CreativeCtmisc.inf, and CreativeEmu10k1.inf)
shut down
istall the SbLive! in any PCI slot except for the one next to the ISA slot
start up
don't install any drivers yet
goto SoundBlaster.com
download the drivers for the SbLive, not Live!Ware, just the drivers.
install the drivers
restart
you should by now have no sound, unless it chooses the same IRQ. if that happens let me know and I'll tell you how to change the IRQ(Little bit more tricky than this)

I get all kinds of problems with this software... too many! Check out the SB Live software itself. I have gotten this problem as well...

go My computer -> Control Panel -> Audio HQ Icon -> Speaker settings

now, play around with the settings until it stops. I usually just put my on the "rock cd" setup and the buzzing stops. Now, I know the problem can be fixed through there, just play around with it.

I have heard that certain motherboards have a problem with SBLive! cards when they have onboard audio that's been disabled. The Epox Athlon board needs a BIOS update to fix the problem.

Ah, German board. Try updating the SBLive! to the latest Liveware3.0 software. Also try removeing all other cards except sound and video, and see if the problem goes away. You could also try taking a regular pencil eraser to the pci contacts on the Live card, and and clean them off. Get some air and blow out the pci slot. If you can reach the website, try downloading the latest BIOS for your system board.
