Well the biggest decision you'll want to make is what kind of processor you want. If you don't have alot of cash and plan on OCing, go for an AMD Duron 750, 800, 850 or even the 900 (All of these are in the $150(all oem) and the last is about only $172). Then gor for a good mobo, if you don't want an ISA slot, go for the Asus A7V, 266 fsb or the Abit KT7a Kt133a fsb266 (Both will run you about 250, but the Asus mobo is alittle more expensive). As for components like CD drives, check out what you want first, it makes no sense to get a DvD drive since DvD 2 is coming out sometime soon, so get a o.k CD-ROM driver and if you want a burner, try for a Yamaha or a Plextor.

what are you wanting to do with the comp?

I just bought a 20gig Maxtor 5400RPM for $105...
not too bad..
If you aren't a Warez Hound and aren't too much into mp3s you can get a good 10gig HD or smaller for pretty cheap...

Ahh just a note, unless you have ALOT of time to burn, don't buy a 5200 rpm drive, it does make a diff.

What's DVD 2, can you elaborate? :)

oh please... there is a big reason to get a dvd. First of all, a decent dvd is always faster then a cdrom; no matter how fast the cdrom is. Plus, you'll be able to play dvd movies through yoru computer if you want; and load dvd based applications. To tell someone to wait for dvd2 is like telling someone not to buy a video card because the radeon2 will be coming out in six months. Dont buy a tv either because HDTV will be coming out in a couple of years.

One, HDTV is already out, I plan on getting a Sony Wega HDtv. Two, telling someone to save themselves a nice bill or two by not getting dvd at the moment, as it should be comming out in a few months. DvD isn't as important as getting a good video card, you shouldn't confuse that with a not so vital component(Watching movies is not the most important thing). Now back to Tdog, just get a cd drive for now if you want to save on cash, will run you at most 30 bucks for a 50x speed, but if you have the cash, do what tuesday say, get a good DvD drive.

And to that drdude asking about DvD2, it's the newest format for dvd, and the capacity is more on the dvd disc. Other then this basic information, the only other thing I know is that it is backwards compatible with old DvD disc. The only I warned him not to get DvD is because people might make the switch to DvDII and then he'd be missing out on something big.

Cool, thanks for replying. with the current double density DVD's 7.4GB of data size, I wonder how much more data they can cram in there!

Case?
Check out this review at [H]ARD|OCP
I am thinking that I may be getting this case (or another, when they have more).

$180.00 and it's water cooled from the factory. Not to mention that there are NO FANS pushing air through the main portion of the system (no dust). All cooling is done in the lower H2O portion.
There is also a spiffy Display for the H2O temps and the fans that cool are regulated based on the temp of the water.

These guys did their homework and are trying to get H2O mainstream. Good for them!

Does it perform?
Check the review. It's better than a good air cooled system (with no pelt) and it's comperable to a high end H2O solution.

Peace,
FunK
