SpeedStream 4100 DSL modem question

Post by Lee Anders »

I have a SpeedStream 4100 dsl modem connected to my Win XP computer for internet connection. Modem works well and computer works well - HOWEVER, a problem I have is trying to place the computer into sleep mode (with) the modem ON. The computer will enter sleep mode and the harddrive will shut down, as it's supposed to - BUT then 'tickling' by the modem will immediately re awaken the harddrive. (If I turn off the modem first- then the computer will go to sleep and the HD will stay shut down) The internet provider tells me not to turn off the modem. They tell me it will damage the modem to turn it on and off regularly. This is a home computer and often times we want to put it into sleep mode to conserve both energy and the lifespan of the harddrive - and I don't believe it's a good idea to turn the computer on and off several times a day. IS there a way to change the settings on the computer to make it less sensitive to the 'tickling' from the modem so the harddrive will remain asleep - when in sleep mode? All suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

right click "my computer"
click properties
click hardware
click device manager
right click properties for your network card/
click "power management"
then uncheck the "allow this device to bring computer out of stanby" see if that helps :)

Modem wakening computer from sleep

Post by Lee Anders »

Dan,

Thank You!

Your tip appears to be working..........the sequence was a little different in that once I made my way to 'device manager' - I had to left clk 'network adaptors', then 'Realtek', to get to 'power management'. There I found the proper section in which to uncheck the item of concern. It always amazes me what can be accomplished, when knowlegeable people, such as yourself, tackles a problem for beginners like me. Thanks Again. Lee Anders
