Cable & Napster

Post by tomco2000 »

New to the cable modem world and looking for help with Napster. Since installing the cable modem, web pages, misc. downloads and email all load noticeably faster. The only thing that does not (actually got very much slower) is Napster downloads. I have changed my Napster setting to "cable", looked for only cable users, users who are not busy and low ping rates, but nothing helps. Songs that used to take 20 mins. to download @ 28.8 now take hours. THAT's how slow it is.

Any help appreciated.

First of all, dump Napster. WinMx is the best choice. You can obtain it at http://www.winmx.com . This program connect to Napster and several other mp3 sharing servers. Most of the speed is depended upon the other user you are downloading from. Try to set rules in the advance section for connections"At lease cable".

Finally heard back from CommuniComm (my cable provider) They say I am pretty much screwed when it comes to "Napster type sites". They are extremely limiting bandwidth to such sites because users were bogging down the system.

Anybody know a way around this?

P.S. Thanks for the responses, suggestions and help!!

I guess I learned something here. I didn't know that a provider could selectivly choose a "type of site" and limit the amount of bandwidth to or from it!

I'm not positive this will work, but it's worth a shot: Find a fast, free proxy server and connect to Napster using that. I'm hoping that it will cause your ISP to see the proxy server address rather than seeing that you are connecting to Napster.

If you try it, let us know if it works.
